SGWFL CUP FINAL PREVIEW: AFC Sudbury Reserves vs Woodbridge Town

Updated: May 14

Woodbridge Town Ladies take on AFC Sudbury Women Reserves in the SGWFL League Cup Final on Sunday, with the Peckers hoping to lift the trophy for the second time.

Having knocked out Bacton United, Bury Town, Halesworth Town and Ipswich Valley Rangers to reach our first final since 2023, where we claimed the trophy for the first time, we look to win silverware in Ashley Rankin’s first season in charge of the club.

But, with the SGWFL Premiership title all but confirmed, AFC Sudbury Reserves are eyeing up a league and cup double, and looking to make history by winning the League Cup for the first time.

Match Details

  • Date: Sunday 17th May 2026

This Sunday presents us with another opportunity to reclaim the Women’s League Cup, and earn the first piece of silverware for any senior side at WTFC this season.

The Women’s League Cup is a competition that we have always done well in, reaching the final in 2022, before winning the competition the following year with a 4-1 victory over Brantham Athletic.

We were knocked out of the Cup at the Quarter-final stage in both the 23/24 and 24/25 campaigns, but this year navigated a tricky draw to set up Sunday’s final.

Whilst the league campaign hasn’t gone our way, this weekend is a huge chance to get WTFC back in the winners circle, and build a platform to push off from next season.

AFC Sudbury Reserves look to win the Women’s League Cup for the first time, with them yet to do so since their formation in 2020. The closest they came to taking the trophy was the Semi-final stage back in 2021.

Having not competed in the competition for the past three seasons, due to playing in the FAWNL South East Reserves Division, Sudbury have the chance to cap off an already memorable season with more silverware.

They have dominated the SGWFL Premiership this season, winning fifteen out of sixteen games, and are yet to lose a single match. The league leaders have scored a staggering eighty goals in all competitions, whilst only conceding twelve.

AFC Sudbury Reserves have been a force this season, and will take some stopping as they look to power their way to a brilliant league and cup double. They are fitting finalists, and we look forward to another brilliant contest this weekend.

Head-to-head record

The two sides have met five times in their history, with the two matchups between the teams this season ending in a tightly-contested 2-2 draw on the opening day of the campaign, and a resounding 6-0 win for AFC Sudbury Reserves last month. The Peckers will be very keen to show that the loss suffered on that day was not representative of the quality within our squad.

The first ever meeting between the two teams came back in 2020, where we ran out 1-0 winners on the day. A goal from Sadie Jamieson was enough to split the two sides, with that game being our only ever win against this weekend’s opposition.

Across the 21/22 season, Sudbury claimed two more big wins over us, with a 5-0 home victory followed by a 6-1 triumph to end a campaign that saw them finish second in the league.

It’s a matchup that has favoured AFC Sudbury Reserves on most occasions, but it’s time we put that right this weekend with silverware on the line.

Woodbridge hoping for multiple success on finals day

It could be an incredibly successful day for Woodbridge Town FC, as it’s not only our Ladies that are in cup final action! The U14 girls, coached by WTFC Ladies’ midfielder Stacey Hadley, take on Lowestoft Town in the U14 Cup Final.

The U15s are also in cup final action as they battle it out with Kesgrave Kestrels, whilst the U16s are searching for glory in the U16 Plate against Claydon.

Best of luck to all three teams in their pursuit of success, and let’s do WTFC proud!
