MATCH REPORT: Woodbridge Town edge out Stowupland with Kiwomya’s late strike

Woodbridge Town Ladies picked up an important victory on their return to league action, as they beat Stowupland Falcons Women 2-1. After falling behind, goals from Lola Beaumont and Rhianna Kiwomya saw the Peckers turn the game around to take the three points.

Following last week’s League Cup semi-final win, Woodbridge were in good spirits as they welcomed 4th place Stowupland Falcons. The Falcons had enjoyed a strong campaign so far, and the Peckers knew that the away side would provide a tough test. But, Woodbridge did well to see off the challenge and claim an important three points.

The contest started evenly, with both sides having half-chances in the opening 15 minutes. Lola Beaumont saw her effort tipped behind by the Falcons goalkeeper, before Eloisa Bruce produced a fine stop to deny Stowupland’s 8 one-on-one. Speculative efforts from Howe and Emerick came and went, and Woodbridge started to gain control of the match. But, just as it felt the Peckers were going to take the lead, it would be the visitors to break the deadlock. After a drop ball, Stowupland went long into the forward who slotted the ball past Bruce to put the away side in front. A frustrating goal to concede after being the better side for the majority of the game.

The Peckers reacted well to going behind, and it didn’t take long before they were back on level terms. After recycling the ball well from a corner, Freya Emerick knocked Jamieson’s cross down to Lola Beaumont, who found the bottom corner with a tidy finish. It was a brilliant response from Woodbridge to draw level only 4 minutes after conceding, and a deserved first goal of the season for Beaumont, who played superbly throughout. The first half came to a close soon after, with both sides locked at one apiece.

Into the second half, and Woodbridge picked up where they left off in the first 45 - getting on the ball and looking to cause problems for Stowupland. The first opportunity to fire the Peckers in front fell for Stacey Hadley, but her effort was put wide of the mark. Sadie Jamieson also went close, as her effort was well saved by the goalkeeper, diving to her right hand side. Stowupland did respond with a couple of chances in behind, but failed to convert. Shannon Green was sin-binned for dissent on 76 minutes, leaving the Peckers down to 10 momentarily.

Despite being a player down, the winner would come for Woodbridge with 8 minutes left to play. A corner swung to the edge of the box was turned goalwards by Stock, and after her effort was blocked, it would be Rhianna Kiwomya to react quickest and poke the ball home. It took its time to come, but the Peckers eventually found the second goal to put them in front. The referee brought proceedings to a close 10 minutes later, and Woodbridge held firm to take an important 2-1 victory.

With this result, Woodbridge leapfrog Stowupland in the table and now sit 4th, 3 points behind AFC Kesgrave who also won. With many games in hand on the sides above, the Peckers will look to finish the season strongly. For Stowupland, they slip to 5th, now a point behind Woodbridge.
