MATCH REPORT: Kiwomya brace sees Woodbridge come from behind to draw

Woodbridge Town Ladies were held at home this weekend by Capel Plough Ladies, as two goals from Rhianna Kiwomya salvaged a point for the Peckers after the visitors raced into a two goal lead.

After a frustrating loss to Needham Market last weekend, Woodbridge Town looked to return to winning ways as they returned to the Homestyle UK Ground. They welcomed in-form Capel Plough, who had climbed the league to sit directly behind the Peckers going into the match. It felt like a must-win for Woodbridge with the top three racing away, but after a poor first half, a draw was a welcome point for the side.

Capel started the game strongly, looking to pick up where they left off last time out and strike first in this contest. A cross lifted into the box after just two minutes glanced off the crossbar, and came as an early warning sign for Woodbridge. The Peckers didn’t get into the game, and the visitors were the better side throughout the opening half hour. The deadlock would be broken on thirty-three minutes, as a good piece of forward play from the Capel striker allowed her to get in on goal and fire the away side in front. A deserved lead, and Woodbridge needed to react.

It went from bad to worse for the Peckers just five minutes later, as Capel Plough doubled their lead. Woodbridge failed to deal with a dangerous corner, and it was the visitors who reacted quickest to fire the ball home. Another frustrating goal to concede for Woodbridge, who had plenty of work to do if they wanted to take anything from the game. There would be a big chance for the Peckers before the half ended, as a ball from the far side was turned goalwards by Freya Emerick, only to be denied by a superb goalline clearance. The half-time whistle came, Woodbridge Town 0 Capel Plough 2.

The Woodpeckers started the second half very well, getting the ball down and playing much better than the first fourty-five. It wouldn’t take long for Woodbridge to get one back, as an error from the Capel Plough goalkeeper allowed Rhianna Kiwomya to score on fifty-three minutes. This was a perfect start for the Peckers, who now had plenty of time to try and complete the comeback.

The momentum was with Woodbridge, who were putting Capel under a lot of pressure defensively. A glorious chance came and went for the Peckers in the 59th minute as Kiwomya got in behind down the right hand side. She cut the ball back, but a mix up between Emerick and Roach-Smith saw the shot scuffed wide with the goal gaping. Beaumont and Stockley both had efforts well saved, and Woodbridge were coming closer to finding the equaliser.

Eventually the Peckers would level the game on seventy-two minutes, as Rhianna Kiwomya pounced first on a miscleared corner to bundle the ball home for 2-2. There’s no stopping Kiwomya at the moment, who has now scored five goals in the last four games. Woodbridge pushed to find a winner, but Capel Plough held out for the final fifteen minutes to take home a well-earned point. Full time, Woodbridge Town 2 Capel Plough 2.

An inspired second half wasn’t enough for the Woodpeckers to turn it around, but every point is important at this stage in the season. This draw does see Woodbridge climb above Stowupland into fourth in the SGWFL Premiership, as they look to close the gap to the top three. Capel Plough drop behind Halesworth Town, and now sit in seventh.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Ladies this weekend, and we look forward to welcoming you throughout the end of the season. The team will be itching to return to winning ways next time out as they travel to Halesworth in the league. Let’s get behind the side for what could be a special end to the season, and as always, UP THE PECKERS!
