PREVIEW: Woodbridge Town vs Ely City

Woodbridge Town's Ryan Marsh vs Mulbarton Wanderers (H) - 09/08/25

Woodbridge Town are back at home this weekend as they welcome Ely City to the Homestyle UK Ground. With the last three home fixtures either being abandoned or postponed, fingers crossed that this weekend’s clash goes ahead with no interruptions. As we close in on the final ten games of the season, this fixture carries great importance for both sides to claim three points, and to begin what will hopefully be a strong finish to the campaign.

It’s been a difficult start to the new year for Woodbridge, as a win away at Walsham was sandwiched in between 5-0 and 8-3 defeats to Mulbarton and Haverhill respectively. It was a dismal showing at The New Croft, and I’m sure the lads are ready to bounce back this weekend. It doesn’t get any easier though, as Ely City have been in good form as of late, only losing one in their last eleven games - the most notable victory of this run was an 8-1 demolition of Cornard United. The Robins currently sit in 3rd, and will hope to solidify their position in the play offs with a win this weekend.

The two sides have already met in the league this season, as the Peckers travelled to Ely and came back 1-3 winners. Goals from Ash Blow, Connor Field and Luke Mallett fired Woodbridge to victory after Ely’s Josh Collins was dismissed for a second yellow card. It was a win that came at a pivotal point in the season for Woodbridge, who went on a great run winning five on the bounce. Once again, the Peckers take on the Robins in desperate need of rekindling that strong midseason form.

If Woodbridge Town are to take anything from this Saturday, they’ll need to tighten up defensively. Ely City have scored the second most goals in the league this season, and top scorer Thomas Stoker will be hoping to add to his total of thirteen goals since he joined the visitors from Haverhill Rovers. The Peckers have also looked dangerous coming forward this season, with Ash Blow netting eleven times in twenty-five matches. Alongside him, Connor Field and Kye Webb have both posted a respectable total of eight goals - two players that could cause problems for Ely this weekend.

With the numerous postponements throughout the winter so far, Woodbridge have fallen to 13th in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division. But, with at least two games in hand on the teams around them, the Peckers will remain optimistic of climbing back into the top half. A win in this fixture could see the Woodpeckers jump above Dereham, and close the gap to the top ten. Ely City will be hopeful to keep their promotion charge on track, and another three points this time out would solidify their position in the top three.

It certainly wasn’t our best showing last time out, but the lads will be keen to get back to competitive action and right their wrongs from last weekend. There is still a lot of football to be played, and there’s a good chance that the Peckers will end the season in a positive position. Every game is a learning curve for the side, and we appreciate every single one of you that has stuck by the team this season through the highs and the lows. Let’s get behind Chris, Liam and the lads for what could be a promising finish, and as always, UP THE PECKERS!
