PREVIEW: Woodbridge Town Ladies vs AFC Sudbury Women Reserves

Woodbridge Town Ladies are back at the Homestyle UK Ground this Sunday as they take on league leaders AFC Sudbury Reserves. This game promises to be a good contest, with the Peckers the only team so far this season to take points off the unbeaten table toppers. Hopefully this Sunday the Ladies can end the undefeated run for the visitors and close the gap at the top of the table.

It wasn’t the return to league action that Woodbridge had hoped for last time out, as 3 second half goals saw the Peckers fall to defeat against Ramsey & Mistley. However, the first half was an even contest at 0-0, and the effect of over 90 days without a league game definitely set in as the match went on. AFC Sudbury on the other hand weren’t in action last week due to plate involvements for other teams, but the visitors have won 7 games in a row since the 2-2 draw to Woodbridge on the opening day. The Ladies know they’ll need to find a similar performance to that fixture if they want to take anything away from this clash.

The goals have been flying in for the opposition this season, with Sudbury netting 53 goals in all competitions. Top scorer for the Yellows this season Olivia Clennell poses a huge threat to Woodbridge, as well as Joy Hughes who has enjoyed a great campaign scoring 12 goals in 7 games. But, Woodbridge have a great record at home this season, winning 5 matches out of 5 and only conceding 3 goals in the process. Keeping the on-fire Sudbury frontline quiet will be a tough job for the Peckers’ defence, but the Ladies have the quality to cause the league leaders problems this weekend.

After last week’s loss, this game feels like a must-win for Woodbridge if they want to challenge AFC Sudbury for the league title. A win for the Peckers would close the gap to 9 points, but with three games in hand, there would be chances to go joint-top in a few weeks time. If the visitors take the 3 points on Sunday, they would be 15 points ahead of Woodbridge, and potentially 8 points clear of everyone. This match-up is a crucial game in the context of the season and the destination of the title.

The Ladies need all the support they can get this weekend, and we hope to see as many of you as possible back at the Homestyle UK Ground supporting the Peckers. It’s been a while since Woodbridge last played at home, and the side can’t wait to bounce back and get firing this Sunday. We appreciate all your support so far this season, and with the title and the County Cup still up for grabs, it could be a great season for the Ladies. Thank you once again, and as always, UP THE PECKERS!
