MATCH REPORT: Peckers denied victory as fog sees game abandoned at half-time

It was a frustrating afternoon for all involved at the Homestyle UK Ground, as for the second time this season, Woodbridge Town vs Heacham FC was postponed at half-time - with the Peckers leading once again.

Having had to wait a while for their first home game of the year, Woodbridge were hoping to put in a strong performance and bounce back after a run of poor results. With the fixture already being abandoned earlier in the season due to floodlight failure, the long-awaited return of Heacham to the Homestyle UK Ground looked to finally be fulfilled. But the weather had other ideas…

The Peckers started the game strong, and looked to take control of the contest quickly. This early pace should have led to the lead, as after just 4 minutes, Liam Ablitt lashed a great chance over the bar from close range. Woodbridge remained in control, with Heacham only really threatening from direct long balls. Around the half-hour mark, good play down the right hand side presented an opportunity for Laurie Higgs, but his effort was blocked well by Heacham’s defender. Pressure was mounting on the visitors, and eventually Kye Webb picked up the ball on the left-hand side and beat the keeper with a curled effort into the far corner. A deserved lead for the lads, who had been on top for the majority of the game.

By this point, the fog had rolled in quite quickly, with visibility becoming increasingly worse. It didn’t stop Hurst pulling off a superb save on 38 minutes, as a Heacham free-kick looked destined to find the back of the net. The first real chance for the visitors, and Hurst did incredibly well to tip it over the bar. Woodbridge were back on top quickly though, and as it reached additional time in the first half, the ball fell to Higgs who found a second for the Peckers with a tidy finish - not that anyone could see it! The first half came to an end, with Woodbridge 2-0 ahead, but visibility was too low for any further action.

It’s disappointing for this fixture to be abandoned again, especially with Woodbridge leading Heacham in both encounters this season. It also means that Higgs’ first goal for the club won’t stand, but at least everyone will be able to see his official first strike when it happens! Thank you to all the supporters who turned out for this game, and we look forward to welcoming you back on a clearer day. An away trip to Walsham Le Willows is up next for Woodbridge, but make sure to get down to the Homestyle UK Ground on Tuesday as the U23s host Stanway Rovers U23s in the Chell trophy Quarter-Final. Your support is always appreciated, keep backing the lads through 2026, and as always, UP THE PECKERS!
