Woodbridge 0 v 2 Thetford

Report by Rob Binns

Woodbridge Town’s run of consecutive home wins was ended by a 2-0 defeat to high-flying Thetford Town.

Cameron King opened the scoring early on for Thetford and a second goal against the run of play courtesy of Callum Olpin proved enough to take the points away from the Peckers.

The visitors took the lead after two minutes when Dylan Grove pulled the ball back to King who had ghosted unmarked into the box. He took a touch and calmly finished into the far bottom corner off the inside of the post.

Thetford had a chance to extend their lead in the 35th minute when early substitute Shaun Avis was looped in behind. He brought the ball down well but blasted over the bar under pressure from Jamal Wiggins.

The visitors went close in the 56th minute Olpin checked inside and tried a curler from the edge of the box but Alfie Stronge got down well to save it after it came through a crowd of bodies.

They doubled their lead shortly after when Olpin was played in behind on the counterattack by Dan Gilchrist. The winger broke down the left flank into the box and checked onto his right before finishing in the far corner.

Thetford had another chance five minutes later when King broke down the left and cut back for Gilchrist who tried to squeeze an effort into the near post but found the side netting.

The Peckers went close in the 72nd minute when substitute Armani Schaar won a header on the edge of the box and flicked it on for Kelsey Trotter who beat the onrushing keeper to the ball and tried to dink it over him but his effort went over.

Woodbridge had a chance to pull a goal back in stoppage time when Taylor Southgate met Kubi Kussan’s corner but he could only head wide.

There ultimately proved to be no way back into the game for the Peckers who suffered defeat. A tough challenge awaits the lads next weekend with an away trip to runaway league leaders Mildenhall Town.
