Heacham 1 v 0 Peckers

Report by Rob Binns

Woodbridge Town fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat away at Heacham despite a very positive performance.

Colby Wood’s second half goal was enough to earn the points for the Norfolk side in what was a thrilling clash despite what the scoreline may suggest.

The first sight of goal for the Peckers came after 16 minutes when Billy Clark ran onto a loose pass and spotted the keeper off his line. He fired a first time effort from 35 yards out which dipped narrowly over the bar.

The hosts nearly took the lead in the 24th minute when Luke Grey rolled a ball back across the box for Jack Noble who hit it first time but was denied by a brilliant sliding challenge from Sean Rea.

The Peckers went close in first half stoppage time when, following some good work down the left by Armani Schaar, the ball deflected kindly for Clark who hit it on the turn but saw his effort saved.

Woodbridge almost went in front three minutes into the second half when Ryan Keeble dinked the ball across to Clark who brought it down but his half volley was fired over the bar.

Heacham took the lead in the 68th minute when Liam Mitchell broke down the left and sent a low ball across the box which was tapped home by substitute Wood at the far post.

They almost doubled their lead 10 minutes later from a deep cross from the left which Ben Coe headed goalwards but Alfie Stronge palmed it away.

The Peckers were forced to play the last 10 minutes with 10 men when Cam Panich’s game was ended early by injury and Luke Hyam having already used the single substitute available to him due to the already injury-weakened squad.

The man disadvantage restricted the Pecker’s chances of getting a deserved equaliser but there were plenty of positives from the performance into next week’s clash away at Kirkley & Pakefield.

Congratulations also to Aaron Morrison who after impressing in the 18s this season was given his chance with the firsts.
