Easter holidays and
other late call-offs meant that Woodbridge Town U12’s
started their crucial April programme with only 9
players for their league fixture against Felixstowe &
Walton at Melton.
However, the nine
players were determined that lack of numbers would not
stop them getting the win that they wanted to keep their
hopes of a top-two finish alive and rose to the
challenge magnificently.
A hat-trick from Ross
Tennant, a thunderous free-kick from Alex Hardwick and
Scott Clarke’s 38th goal of the season proved
too much for the visitors, but it wasn’t just the goal
scorers who won this game for Woodbridge, it was the
belief, commitment, skill and genuine hard work of every
Woodbridge player on the field that turned a potential
defeat into a famous and hugely deserved victory.
A delighted Ed Mellamphy said after the
game “…and players on holiday or still a-bed, shall
think themselves accursed they were not here, and hold
their playing positions cheap whiles any speaks that
fought with us upon Melton playing field today" he went
on to add “…never on the field of football at Melton,
has so much been owed by so many to so few.”
The nine players who will now take their
place in legend and become the subject of many
footballing ballads were:
Thomas Anderson, Scott Clarke, Conor
Clements, Thomas Debenham, Alex Hardwick, William
Mellamphy, Jack Spurling, Ross Tennant and Luke Wright.
