On the penultimate league match of the
season, Woodbridge entertained last years league & Cup
winners Witnesham Wasps at Kingston Park.
Having already beaten the Wasps early on
in the season and with a 100% record to date in the
league, the boys knew that a draw at the least would
secure the Division 1 Championship. What the boys,
coaches, or supporters didn't expect though, was the
horrendous weather conditions that everyone woke up to
on Saturday morning. With gale force winds and regular
snow and hale storms this was one morning you wished you
had stayed in bed!
The game got under way with both sides
competing for the ball at every occasion but with the
defences remaining solid. Half way through the first
half Woodbridge were awarded a free kick 10 yards
outside the Wasps box; George Bowman stepped forward and
hit the ball well into a driving wind, the ball
finishing up in the top corner of the net with the
goalkeeper managing to get a hand to it, but not enough
to keep it out. Wasps, with the wind behind them applied
pressure to the Woodbridge goal for the next 5 minutes
with a series of corners and free kicks. It was one of
those free kicks taken by Kieran Turner that almost
levelled the score, with the ball heading for the top
right hand corner some how Nathan Thurlow dived full
stretch and with one hand diverted the ball out for a
corner kick.
The second half was again very tight
with end to end football, but Woodbridge managed to add
a second goal from some exceptional skill by Joshua
Hitter who dribbled past three Wasps defenders to calmly
slot the ball past the out coming keeper. The game
concluded 2-0 to Woodbridge and the boys celebrated
after a hard game & season to win the league.
Well done to the boys, Nathan Thurlow,
Olly Sharman, Callum Scott, Josh Moore, Josh Hitter,
George Bowman, Dan Hanson & Taylor Southgate.
