Woodbridge Town U16 crowned County Cup Champions
In a thrilling, first ever Tesco Suffolk County Girls
u16 Cup Final held at Henley Community Centre,
Woodbridge Town Ladies (Girls) FC emerged as inaugural
winners against Debenham Leisure Centre Youth (Girls),
winning 4-2 on penalties after the teams were deadlocked
at 1-1 after extra time. The result means that the girls
progress to the next stage of the Tesco Cup competition,
the Central Regional Finals, to be held at City
University Sports Grounds in Birmingham on 26 April
2009.
After going behind to an early goal in the third minute
the girls didn’t panic and were mature enough to stick
to the prearranged game plan – trusting the excellent
coaching provided by Glen Snell, a first team player
with Woodbridge Town FC and team coach for the last
three years. Glen recently achieved his Level 3 FA
Coaching qualification and the girls like to think that
the challenge they have represented over the last three
years has made this possible.
The well deserved equaliser came in the 30th minute when
an excellent shot was struck from 25 yards by Alex
Leckie who picked her spot and sent the ball between the
goalkeeper’s despairing reach and the cross bar.
It is never a good way to settle a season long
competition but penalty kicks were to follow and there
was no shortage of volunteers to step up for Woodbridge.
Woodbridge scored each of theirs and Debenham missed two
which meant that the fifth one was not necessary, well
done to Chelsea “Trigger” Beale in the Woodbridge goal
who saved two goal bound efforts from the spot in the
shoot-out.
Team Manager John Nunn commented, ‘What a great game.
The girls worked really hard as a team and are over the
moon to have won the match and to be representing
Suffolk FA in the next round of the Tesco Cup. The game
was an excellent advert for both youth and girls
football and a crowd of over 150 people was testament to
the interest in girls’ football now. The game was played
under the FA Respect programme and unusually, referee
Chris Dale made a speech at the cup presentation
congratulating both teams and all spectators for the
excellent spirit and sportsmanship shown.”
The Tesco Cup is part of a wider commitment from Tesco
to encourage children to get involved in Sport. Now in
its fourth year, Tesco works in conjunction with the FA
and local communities to help improve the football
skills of young players.
Tesco Cup teams compete in three age groups, U13 boys,
U14 girls and U16 girls at County and then Regional
level in a bid to become National Champions and
ultimately, to represent their country at the UK Final.
The National Winners, in each age category, from
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will play
in the UK Final to be held at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton
on Sunday May 24, 2009 where they will battle to be
crowned overall UK Champions. |
