Many coaches, managers, and even
spectators say that football is about making the right
decisions at the right times which dictate how a game
finishes and I am sure when looking back, a number of
the players in black and white shirts may look back when
they have snatched at shots or tried the odd outrageous
shot from long range when perhaps if they had got their
heads up, they may have been better playing in a
colleague who would have fared better.
On top of this there were times when in
good positions in the wider areas, a super cross was put
in with a sincere lack of bodies attacking the ball, a
good through ball that just needed to hold up a fraction
before running through to the keeper and even some
passes played slightly behind them rather than in their
natural flight forward which allowed a tough and
determined Debenham team to get bodies back and thwart
the natural attacking flair and pace that Woodbridge had
upfront in the shape of Seaman, Baldry and Smith.
To their credit, the 11 young lads from Debenham proved
stubborn opposition and in the form of James Cole their
rampaging fleet-footed attacker they had an outlet that
caused some concerns for the backline and if Debenham
had managed to support their talisman better in number,
they may have just caused the upset. Infact, Cole was
kept away from the Woodbridge goal in the main and
especially by Booth at right back who often was in the
right place at the right time. One exception was when
Bruce had to make a good save low down late in the 2nd
half as he cut in from the right but it was the Debenham
keeper that was kept the more active during the game.
Woodbridge will look back on chances
missed which included a goalline clearance in the 1st
half, but were more than worthy to have won the game.
Bruce was in the main protected well by the Woodbridge
backline who were solid throughout but I am sure all of
them will wish to improve on their distribution to their
midfield as Debenham were able to nick more than the one
odd loose ball that came forward although the tireless
running of Caraccio often meant the ball was won back
quickly. There were a number of good passages of play
and possession but also at times a lack of tempo and
fluidity slowed things down but as mentioned before, it
was just that last piece of the jigsaw that was missing.
The introduction of Roots and Hammond added to the
attacking flair for Town as both showed some good
flashes of creativity as the lads laid siege on the
Debenham goal in the closing stages of the game, but try
as they might, the one elusive goal could not come, but
an encouraging start none the less to take into the 2nd
match at Notcutts Park next Thursday.
