Despite being without the County Under 18 foursome of Ben Garnham, Ben Garnham, Luke Read & Ben Seaman, it was still a strong side that was put out onto the pitch!
Despite a reasonable start when Woodbridge passed the ball around patiently, there was very little in the way of goalmouth action in the 1st half as the Wanderers keeper only had a snapshot from Ben Hutton to deal with, while Lewis Rhodes was virtually redundant in the Woodbridge goal.
Just as it looked like both teams would go in goalless at half-time Wanderers latched onto a clearance out of the Woodbridge penalty area quicker than any visiting player & with time to pick his spot a Wanderers player found the bottom corner.
There was a brief resurgence at the start of the 2nd half as Woodbridge camped in the visitors half & Hutton had the ball in the Wanderers net after Jack Severy had hit the bar, but from an offside position.
However, after 53 minutes Wanderers seized control of the cup-tie as their right-sided player escaped from several half-hearted ‘tackles’ before delivering a terrific cross beyond the far post where it was duly headed past Rhodes.
There was a response from Woodbridge as Adam Webster & Hutton had half-chances & substitute, Josh Mayhew beat the offside trap but shot straight at the keeper. In the middle of this spell of pressure Stefan Marsh received a yellow card for handball, which was to prove costly later on!
On 73 minutes, Woodbridge were given a lifeline as Webster created space & delivered a cross for JOSHUA MAYHEW to glance in with a stooping header.
Rhodes immediately made a brave save but within two minutes, the lifeline as good as disappeared when Marsh disagreed with a decision & showed dissent by throwing the ball away & was duly red-carded.
Within minutes, Ipswich Wanderers took full advantage when Hutton, acting as emergency centre-back misjudged a through- ball & the striker evaded Rhodes to fire into the empty net.
The game petered out after the ‘killer’ 3rd goal & Ipswich Wanderers easily saw out the victory to progress to the next round, while Woodbridge must face up to their continued failings & will need to drastically improve work-rate, attitude & discipline if they are to fare any better in their crucial FA Youth Cup tie next Thursday?
Team: Rhodes, Lewis (Mayhew 57), Kempson (Salisbury 45), Rea, Hammond, Marsh – sent off 75), Rahman (Nicklin 45), Webster, Hutton, Tatum, Severy
