Improved performance in 1-5 win at Thetford Town
Monday 10th September 2007
Woodbridge Town finally kick-started their season & got back to winning ways in a vastly improved performance at Thetford on Monday evening, eventually running out 5-1 winners.
Having been beaten in their opening two fixtures, it was a tentative, but also more resolute beginning from Woodbridge, which meant that goalmouth action was in short supply in the opening 20 minutes. Carl Widdowson, who had already headed a corner wide at the far post, suffered a more traumatic experience when he collided with the barrier behind the goal attacking another corner, suffering a severely gashed knee in the process & ended up being taken by ambulance to West Suffolk Hospital.

Throughout a competitive opening period, Woodbridge had enjoyed the bulk of possession, but had only created half-chances, but they had tightened up considerably from recent games, therefore it was surprising that the final 8 minutes of the half yielded 4 goals;

The previous good defensive work from Woodbridge was undone on 39 minutes when an uncontested midfielder had all the time he needed the split the defence to set up Thetford for the opening goal of the game.

Fortunately Woodbridge responded with a ‘3 goal burst’ inside 5 minutes. Firstly, a Jack Severy cross caused chaos & an OWN GOAL to level the score before Severy’s next cross was guided into the net by DANNY TATUM to put us 2-1 ahead. Adam Webster then showed great awareness to set up SEAN REA to score with a deflected drive in 1st half injury time

Having thrown away a 3-1 lead against Stowmarket, it was vital to start the 2nd half well & there were a number of close shaves for Thetford before David Kempson’s cross fell nicely for ADAM WEBSTER, who smashed a wonderfully controlled volley in from the edge of the penalty area.
With nothing left to lose, the game went through an ugly stage as Thetford players sought consolation by way of a number reckless & dangerous fouls & it was a relief to finish the game without any other players joining Widdowson at West Suffolk Hospital. During this passage of fouls, free-kicks & yellow cards, there was one pice of undoubted quality when Webster supplied substitute, JOSH MAYHEW with a fantastic through ball, which Mayhew smashed into the bottom corner to round off the scoring.

Team: Rhodes, Nichols, Kempson, Wright (Mayhew 58), Widdowson (Lewis 25), Marsh, Rea, Webster, Severy (Rahman 58), Tatum & Read

After a series of games in a short space of time, the players will welcome a lighter schedule over the coming days with only the Eastern Junior Alliance side in action this week. They travel to Tiptree on Sunday, before the Ridgeons Youth League team make the short trip to Ipswich Wanderers next Thursday in the Ridgeons Youth League Cup
