Woodbridge Town 4 Long Melford 0
Thursday 27th September 2007
Having been ‘lambasted’ for their performance in their Ridgeon’s League Cup exit at Ipswich Wanderers last week, Woodbridge Town youth team responded in the perfect manner with a performance full of passion, commitment & scintillating football as they crushed Long Melford in the 1st Qualifying Round of the F.A. Youth Cup.
After a fast & frenetic opening 20 minutes from both teams, which resulted in little, if any, goalmouth action, Woodbridge settled down to dominate the remainder of the 1st half, but the score-line remained goal-less at the interval, despite shots from Luke Read, Matt Oxbrow & Sean Rea going narrowly off target, Tatum testing the keeper with a free-kick & some dangerous runs from Adam Webster & Jack Severy that always seemed to be thwarted by Long Melford’s impressive centre back, Steve Adams.

Woodbridge remained in control from the start of the 2nd half & continually threatened to grab the vital opening goal & eventually it arrived on 55 minutes when Severy got in behind the defence & released ADAM WEBSTER to coolly slide his shot past the keeper.
The tie was a good as sealed 10 minutes later when David Kempson got forward from left back & fired in a terrific cross that caused chaos in the visitors defence before Webster showed great composure to slide the ball to LUKE READ, who side-stepped a defender & calmly rolled the ball into the far corner.
Long Melford tried in vain to get back into the game with two efforts at goal forcing routine saves from Tom Ross, who then got lucky when he spilled a cross, but managed to scramble the ball off his line to save his own embarrassment.
However, it was Woodbridge who always looked likely to score again with Severy & substitute, Joshua Mayhew posing the biggest threats, but not complimenting their excellent approach play with the required finishing!
It was therefore a surprise that the 3rd goal arrived as late as the 88th minute when Read tricked his way into the area & when he was eventually squeezed out by tired defenders the ball broke kindly for SEAN REA & he volleyed into the bottom corner from outside the area. A fourth goal came deep into injury time as JOSHUA MAYHEW made up for previous missed chances by racing away & coolly beating the keeper after Rea had produced yet another sublime through ball.

Woodbridge’s reward for victory over Long Melford is a home tie against March Town, who defeated Kirkley & Pakefield 2-1 earlier this week.

Team: Ross, Nichols, Kempson (Widdowson 75), Rea, Hammond, Marsh, Read, Oxbrow (Wright 82), Webster, Tatum (Mayhew 71) & Severy.

It is a busy schedule for the Under 18 teams as the Eastern Junior Alliance side travel to Bury Town this Sunday, while the Ridgeon’s Youth team travel to Watton on Tuesday evening.
