David Kempson, Stefan Marsh & Craig Jennings
from the starting team at Boreham Wood last
Friday also started this game with several
different players given an opportunity,
including Pete Richardson who was making his
return from injury.
With
new 1st team Manager,
Glenn Read
& his assistant, Andy Lawrence in
attendance,
Woodbridge
started quickly with a number of early attacks
threatening the 1st goal, which duly
arrived on 9 minutes when Sam Lewis, sent
Jennings
down the right wing & when his cross was
spilled by the Leiston keeper, PETE RICHARDSON
was on hand to slam in the rebound.
Despite
being under pressure, Leiston offered threats on
the counter-attack with the pacy number 7
flashing one drive inches wide, while a header
just cleared the bar & Lewis Rhodes made one
good block.
David
Kempson was inches away from his 1st
SETEC goal when his 30 yard drive rebounded back
off the crossbar, but a two goal burst between
24th & 28th minutes
put
Woodbridge
firmly in control. Adam Webster, who was off the
pitch injured, was still waiting to be replaced
by Ross Nicklin when CRAIG JENNINGS escaped the
attentions of numerous Leiston defenders to
blast in his shot & within minutes
Kempson’s storming left-wing run & precise
pass teed up PETE RICHARDSON to score at the
near post.
The
remainder of the half saw
Woodbridge
guilty of over-complicating their play & it
was Rhodes who was the busier of the two
goalkeepers, making two point-blank saves to
deny Leiston a goal.
The
2nd half began in similarly
disjointed fashion with neither team able to
keep possession well enough to create chances
until James Churchill produced a piece of
quality & the ideal pass for CRAIG JENNINGS
to race onto before placing his shot beyond the
keeper.
Churchill
had a great chance to get on the score-sheet
himself after
Jennings
had dispossessed the last defender but he hit
his shot straight at the keeper without a
defender anywhere near him. Leiston actually
went down the other end & scored within 60
seconds courtesy of two quick passes, a
well-timed diagonal run & clinical finish.
JAMES
CHURCHILL did make amends for the earlier miss
when with 5 minutes remaining he found the back
of the net to complete the scoring after
Jennings has unselfishly squared the ball for
him, despite looking set to complete his
hat-trick.
Next
Wednesday the Under 18s travel to Bungay for
their first Ridgeons League meeting with the
Central Division newcomers.
