Diss Town 3 Woodbridge Town 2
A totally inept performance, littered with yet more defensive flaws resulted in Woodbridge losing their 2nd successive league game (more than they lost throughout the whole of 2006-07 season) at the hands of Diss Town.
Throughout the defeat to Stowmarket the previous week, Woodbridge passed the ball at a quick tempo & constantly caused their defence problems. Unfortunately, the quality of our passing & ‘pedestrian’ movement never allowed us to build up any sort of pressure & Danny Tatum’s snapshot was our only worthwhile effort at goal in the opening 40 minutes, although several dubious offside decisions didn’t help our cause!
Meanwhile, at the other end, the lone Diss striker was constantly causing Woodbridge’s 3 centre halves problems & it was a combination of poor finishing & Lewis Rhodes in the Woodbridge goal that kept the home team at bay until the 37th minute!
When Diss eventually took the lead, it was courtesy of a fantastic 1st time volley following a 40 yard cross-field pass. However two minutes later it was scandalous defending that gifted the Diss scorer the freedom of our half & time to pick his spot & double the lead.
We were given a fortunate way back into the game when Jack Severy’s cross was deflected into his own net by a Diss defender & within a minute Josh Mayhew had a chance to level the score but his 1st touch left too tight an angle!
Fortunate to only be 2-1 behind at the break, Woodbridge were little better in the opening stages of the 2nd half & enjoyed several ‘escapes’ around their own goal. A triple substitution finally saw the visitors find some sustained pressure & quality football, led by substitutes Luke Read & James Wright.
Indeed, it was Read who grabbed an equalizer, placing in his shot after good build-up play involving Wright, Adam Webster, Mayhew & Mo Rahman.
Despite this new lease of life, there were still too many errors from our defence & having escaped when Diss had a ‘goal’ suspiciously ruled out for offside, the lessons were not heeded & Ted Nichols’ rash decision to tackle resulted in a foul & a 84th minute penalty, which Rhodes got a hand to but couldn’t keep out.
Rhodes made a great save moments later to keep us within touching distance & was nearly rewarded when firstly Webster & then Carl Widdowson went narrowly wide with late chances.
Over the 90 minutes Woodbridge players could have no arguments about this latest defeat & cannot argue about the league table either, which shows them sitting at the bottom with 0 points from 2 games & a worrying 8 goals conceded, which would have been more but for Lewis Rhodes!
Team: Rhodes, Lewis (Rahman 60), Kempson, Widdowson, Nichols, Marsh, Rea (Wright 60), Webster, Mayhew, Tatum & Severy (Read 60)
It’s a trip to Thetford on Monday evening when we look to record our first points of the season & even more importantly, give a performance that befits the club?
