FA YOUTH CUP THIRD ROUND QUALIFYING
.
Boreham Wood 3 Woodbridge Town 2 (aet)
Friday 9th November 2007
On an emotional evening, Woodbridge Town’s exceptional youngsters eventually exited the FA Youth Cup at the hands of a lively Boreham Wood team, but a simple score-line could not do justice to the immense performance that the lads gave or the heartbreak that the boys suffered after being 120 seconds away from an amazing victory & opportunity to host Swansea City in the 2nd Round.

Unfortunately, Ben Seaman did not pass his fitness test, but on the plus side Ben Garnham returned after 5 weeks out & Stefan Marsh was available again after suspension & they replaced Adam Webster & Grant Salisbury from the team which knocked out Debenham a fortnight ago.

In the opening period it was Boreham Wood who made the early running & Tom Ross gave an early indicator to the sort of game he would have when he produced an instinctive ‘tip-over’ from a close range header, while there were several scrambles & ‘hairy’ moments in Woodbridge’s penalty area.
Gradually, we settled down & began to pass the ball to create chances with Jack Severy twice denied by last-ditch blocks, while Craig Jennings was thwarted by brave goalkeeping. Although we were constantly stretched by the home team’s pacy attacks, it was Luke Read who came closest to scoring the opening goal when his header rebounded back off the bar following David Kempson’s inviting cross.
Just when it seemed that both teams would go in level at half-time, Boreham Wood won the ball on their left & delivered a wicked ball behind the entire Woodbridge defence, which was easily tapped in at the far post.

The 2nd half saw Woodbridge have better possession but fail to create too many chances, while Boreham Wood constantly threatened to score again on the break.
On 70 minutes, after a rare quiet spell in the game, JACK SEVERY wriggled into a space in the penalty area & lashed a right-footed drive into the roof of the net to spark joyous scenes from Woodbridge players & supporters. Almost immediately Severy had another good chance, but struck his shot too close to the keeper.
In what was a scintillating game between two skilled & committed teams there was just 1 highly controversial & ugly moment when a home forward lunged in late, high & unnecessarily on Woodbridge keeper, Ross & was very fortunate to escape with only a caution.
Woodbridge anger turned to joy within minutes as Ben Garnham released CRAIG JENNINGS & he lifted his lob over the advancing keeper from 35 yards & everybody waited for what seemed a lifetime before the ball finally rolled over the line to kick-start more ‘spine-tingling’ celebrations. Severy saw his chip drop the wrong side of the bar minutes later, but after that near miss it was all hands to the defensive pump as Boreham Wood threw everything into Woodbridge’s penalty area. Ross defied his ‘dead leg’ to make a sensational block to maintain the lead, but 3 minutes into the time added on for his treatment, Boreham Wood’s pressure paid dividend when they kept a number of crosses alive & finally forced a close range header over Ross’ line.
Incredibly there was still time for one last chance & it was the best moment of the match as TOM ROSS pulled off an unbelievable ‘world class’ save from a close-range header which was almost in the top corner before a clawing right hand diverted the ball wide.

Extra time saw Boreham Wood come out of the blocks quickest again & they hit the crossbar with a close range volley, but Garnham replied with a rasping drive which forced a sensational reflex save from the home keeper.
With the game moving from end to end with tired bodies strewn all over the pitch it was Boreham Wood that grabbed the winning goal on 111 minutes when a sliced shot fell perfectly to a team-mate & the ball was clinically fired into the net.
Despite still chasing everything we could not create that one more chance to take the game to penalties & at the end of extra time tears flowed in the Woodbridge ranks (players officials & spectators) but never could the club be more proud of one of their teams.

Good Luck to Boreham Wood in the 2nd round against Swansea, but it was so nearly Woodbridge hosting the professional team.

Team: Ross, Nichols (Wright 115), Kempson, Rea (Webster 68), Marsh, Hammond, Read, Garnham, Jennings, Tatum (Mayhew 62) & Severy.
