| Woodbridge Town kicked off their Under 18 Eastern Junior Alliance league season with a good performance & last-gasp victory at home to Newmarket on Sunday. |
| Fielding only two 2nd year players in Sam Lewis & Mo
Rahman, it was an unsurprisingly nervous start for the Woodbridge youngsters, who were under the management of Ben Woolnough & Grant Monaghan for the first time. |
| The visitors took a 14th minute lead when their corner was half-cleared, but was returned with interest as the ball flashed into the roof of the Woodbridge net, courtesy of a vicious volley, which gave Nathan Allinson no chance. |
| However within 8 minutes Woodbridge had not only levelled matters, but were 2-1 ahead. A goalmouth scramble saw Miles Powell force a point-blank save from the Newmarket keeper only for MO RAHMAN to head in the rebound for the equalizer before Jonjo Hood-Wright & Rahman combined for the latter to deliver a teasing cross which was headed home by the diving BEN HUTTON. |
| The contest remained even all the way up to & beyond half-time with both teams having their little spells of dominance & playing some attractive football before Newmarket levelled the score at 2-2 when a cross was cut back into the path of a forward who struck a firm shot into Allinson’s top corner. |
| This immediately ‘jerked’ Woodbridge into life with Joshua Mayhew firing wide with only the keeper to beat & within a minute, hitting the under-side of the bar with an audacious volley, which also saw Hutton hit the crossbar with the rebound. |
| However, not to be denied a quickly-taken short corner paid dividends when Rahman supplied another perfect cross & DAVID KEMPSON glanced the ball into the top corner with his head for the winning goal. |
Team: Allinson, Salisbury (Garnham 72), Hood-Wright, Wright
(Secco 72), Kempson, Lewis, Fulker, Powell, Mayhew (Lawrence 72), Hutton, &
Rahman.
