Woodbridge Town 1 Heybridge Swifts 3
Sunday 24th February 2008

Our Eastern Junior Alliance team suffered their 2nd successive 3-1 home defeat, this time at the hands of Heybridge Swifts.

Once again, Woodbridge fielded a young side, lacking any 2nd year players & despite another performance, which consisted of controlled possession, paid the price for their 1st half indiscipline.

As against Stanway last Sunday, Woodbridge found themselves a goal down inside 2 minutes after Grant Salisbury conceded a free-kick & was then beaten to the delivery by a Heybridge opponent who volleyed in.

James Churchill saw his shot tipped over the bar by the keeper & there were also goalmouth scrambles following two corners as Woodbridge threatened an equalizer.

The Woodbridge philosophy of throwing players forwards at every attack always leaves the opposition a chance of a counter-attack & after surviving one scare, the next Heybridge venture into the Woodbridge half was ruthlessly ended with a scything foul by Salisbury, who was duly cautioned & despite appeals that the foul had been committed outside the area & penalty was awarded & despatched.

The pattern of the game stayed the same for the remainder of the half with Woodbridge playing the more attractive passing game, but not threatening the Heybridge goal too often while the visitors possessed a goal-threat & indeed added a 3rd goal on the half hour.

When Woodbridge did get on the score-sheet, it was in the strangest manner – a route 1 goal! Salisbury released JONJO HOOD-WRIGHT in behind the Heybridge defence to beat the keeper. Ben Hutton should have had a 2nd goal minutes later but his header was saved on the line.

Although the Woodbridge 1st half performance had been good, despite the 1-3 score-line, they didn’t pass the ball with the same conviction after the break with the only efforts at goal being a Hutton shot across the face of goal & Powell firing just over.

At the other end, having lost David Kempson to injury, the home defence were even more stretched & it was mainly due to wastefulness in front of goal that Heybridge did not add to their three 1st half goals, although they did also hit the crossbar.

Team: Allison, Bultitude, Hood-Wright, Wright (Nicklin 65), Salisbury, Kempson (Holmes 52), Hutchings, Powell, Hutton, Tatum Churchill (Secco 65)
