Diss Town Res. 1 Woodbridge Town Res. 2 |
| Saturday 29 August 2009 |

With 3 call-offs just prior to
travelling, preparations for the trip to Diss
could not have been worse as only a bare 11
travelled with no recognised goalkeeper in the
party. |
|
However, after persuading Shaun
Lugo to take the gloves and juggling the players
around to fit a 4-4-2 as best as possible, those
parents that did travel along with manager
Weavers and stand-in sidekick Frost, ended up
being treated to a gutsy and spirited display
from a very young Woodbridge side that did the
club and themselves proud.
Although that opening paragraph may portray a
backs against the wall game, it was far from it
and in the end Woodbridge thoroughly deserved to
take all 3 points from the game. Whilst the more
senior Diss side had strength, height and
presence about it, our young lads had the
advantage over the grass in speed of thought and
turn of foot and actually played the better
football over the course of the game. A lively
opening to the game saw last weeks hat-trick
hero Baldry have the 1st chance but he dragged
his shot wide when placed well and although he
ended the game not on the scoresheet , his
self-less running and workrate at the top end of
the pitch kept the Diss backline on their toes.
They also had to contend with the speed and
direct running of Callum Smith who looked
dangerous every time he was found in the wide
areas and it was from such a run and shot from
Smith that Woodbridge took the lead when the
keeper failed to hold onto his stinging drive
and Hammond ghosted in to follow up to score.
Diss should have levelled soon after, on at
least 2 occasions, when balls from the left
managed to go across crowded penalty areas with
no one able to put a touch to force it home, but
in the main Diss were restricted to shots from
outside the area which failed to trouble Lugo in
the goal, although I am sure he would have liked
more urgency in closing those down. As the 1st
half wore on, our young lads looked ever
dangerous coming forward but were guilty if
anything of picking the wrong final ball and
several promising positions were wasted but
deserved the half-time lead they came in with.
A sloppy start to the 2nd half saw Diss have
early pressure but this was more a result of us
handing possession back on a plate with some
rather erratic passing at times but the defence
again shut many a door with young Thickitt
showing good signs already at this level winning
a number of tackles and headers in the air
alongside the composed Clouting. Both were
supported well by Balaam at left back and Culf
stuck to his task at right-back well in an
encouraging display from him. Ahead of them the
tireless work from Barton and Nicklin proved
invaluable and both should take great credit
from the game as they stood up to a lot in the
centre of the park and linked well at times to
release the pace of Smith or the trickery of
Hammond down the right whose great touch and
footwork saw him ghost into some good positions.
None more so than when he controlled a long
flighted ball from Thickitt only to blaze over
when well placed and then shortly after twisting
free to give space to Baldry who this time
lifted his shot over rather than wide.
It looked as though we were made to pay when
Diss levelled from a free-kick given away by
Thickitt who had got the wrong side of the
attacker in the build-up. The flighted ball came
back off a Woodbridge head to the Diss player
who forced it home from a yard out and it has to
be said we had to dig deep in the following 10
minutes or so as Diss took the game to us. Lugo
saved well at the feet of the striker after
kicking the ball straight to him but we were
struggling to get out at times and at this stage
we could have done with making a sub or two as
by now some were visibly tiring with the effort
and running that they had done on the big Diss
pitch. However we always had that threat going
forward and with about 7 minutes remaining a
lovely through ball sent Smith clear who could
not be caught to finish well. The game could
have been wrapped up a few minutes later as we
counter-attacked with Smith being bundled down
in the box but his spot-kick was excellently
pushed aside but the final whistle came soon
after and the youngsters could feel satisfied
with their days work in the circumstances.
Team: Lugo, Balaam, Thickitt, Clouting, Culf,
Smith, Barton, Nicklin, Hammond, Baldry and
Roots.
