With
a big FA Youth Cup tie the following evening all
of the Under 18 team players involved were
rested, although Boto was joined by 1st
team defenders Arran Sheppard & Grant
Monaghan to give the team a bit more experience.
It
was Boto who gave Woodbridge a 16th
minute lead, racing away from the home defence
to slot home, but within 2 minutes a free header
from close-range following a corner gave 16 year
old Lewis Rhodes absolutely no chance. It was in
controversial surroundings that Walsham took the
lead shortly afterwards when Rhodes made a save
at a Walsham strikers’ feet, but despite being
clearly pushed down when going for the loose
ball, nothing was spotted by the officials &
an empty net was duly found.
Despite
the early goals it had been a opening half of
little quality on the whole, before
Woodbridge
grabbed an equalizer with their first move of
real quality in the game as several short, quick
passes in their own half resulted in Liam
Hillyard sliding in Boto, who ran clear &
beat the keeper with ease.
There
was more of a tempo to the Woodbridge play at
the start of the half, but there were still many
dangerous signs in their defensive areas &
it was no surprise when lapses of concentration
at a Walsham corner gifted them two
opportunities to put in crosses & when the 2nd
arrived a lone home player had the penalty area
to himself to head in. Boto levelled on the hour
after breaking through Walsham’s defence,
rounding the keeper & scoring from the
angle, but joy was short-lived when a
harmless-looking free-kick from deep was watched
by those wearing black & white shirts &
attacked by a whole host of home players –
4-3.
Somehow
there was a lull in the scoring as defences made
mistake after mistake, which all went unpunished
but these were replaced by a spate of yellow
cards as the game went through a disjointed
period. It was Walsham who had the final say
when they wrapped up the win at the 2nd
attempt after
Rhodes
had saved the initial shot.
On
Saturday, the reserves host Halstead.
