Reserves defeat Stanway for first League Cup win |
| Saturday 15th September 2007 |
| Woodbridge Town 3 Stanway Rovers 2 |
| Woodbridge Town Reserves picked up their first Group victory in this season’s League Cup competition after a hard-fought battle with Stanway Rovers. |
Matt Oxbrow, who was making his first competitive appearance of the season, immediately had an impact when he worked his way into the area before being fouled, allowing SEAN REA to put Woodbridge ahead from the penalty spot. Adam Webster tested the keeper as did Oxbrow, while Rea put another effort into the side-netting as Woodbridge’s young side started brightly.
Bolstered by the experience of Andy Lawrence at the heart of the defence, clear chances were kept to a minimum with Tom Ross coping with everything that came his way until the half-hour when a quick, incisive move cut the home midfield & then the defence wide open for the equalizer. This affected both teams in different ways as Woodbridge began giving the ball away needlessly & Stanway pushed forward, being rewarded with a 2nd goal following a cross & close-range finish.
However, both teams went in level at half-time as Joe Yearly released Ben Hutton down the right wing & he squared perfectly for BEN HAMMOND to score from under the crossbar. It could have been an even better position for Woodbridge as Rea saw his 30 yard drive cannon back off the corner of post & crossbar in injury time?
The 2nd half saw the visitors in the ascendancy & the home goal living a charmed life as wave after wave came in the direction of the Woodbridge goal, but somehow Ross & company managed to fend off everything, while ‘lady luck’ also smiled upon those in black & white stripes.
The key moment in the game arrived with just over 10 minutes remaining (& from possibly our only real chance of the entire half) as Webster tricked his way past two opponents & crossed to the far post for JOE YEARLY to head into the roof of the net.
The joy was short-lived when an ugly incident in the home penalty area resulted in punches thrown & by the time calm was restored both teams had been reduced to 10 men, with Oxbrow spoiling his comeback by seeing ‘red’ for Woodbridge!
It was all hands to the pump in the final few minutes as Stanway threw everything in search of an equalizer, but Woodbridge just about managed to hold on for a plucky victory.
The win was made even more satisfying by the facts that Stanway Rovers were divisional champions last season, so this was some scalp & that apart from Lawrence (40 something?), only Yearly from the rest of the team had turned 18 years old!
Team: Ross, Kempson (Tatum 61), Nichols, Rea, Marsh, Lawrence (Fulker 87), Hammond, Oxbrow (sent off 90), Hutton (Mayhew 73), Webster & Yearly.
