Woodbridge Town Res. 1 Long Melford Res. 2
Saturday 6th October 2007
Woodbridge Town Reserves latest League Cup Group Fixture resulted in a home defeat to Long Melford in what in all honesty was as boring a match as you could imagine!
There were debuts awarded to James Baalham & Simon Smith, who along with 40+ year old, Andy Lawrence, gave a youthful team a bit more experience! However, there was very little in the way of goalmouth action outside of harmless looking shots from distance for either team end during a sloppy 1st half, although it was Long Melford who went in 1-0 ahead after intercepting a midfield pass in 34th minute & breaking quickly to full effect.
The only entertaining moment of the half was when a Long Melford clearance smashed into the back of the referee’s head, sending him into a staggering fall of around 10 yards – otherwise there was very little to raise a smile!

The early part of the 2nd half was no better & both keepers could have stayed in the clubhouse & watched the end of the Rugby, as there was not one effort on goal until 66th minute! Once again it was Long Melford who broke the boredom as a ‘close range shot’ was miraculously saved by Tom Ross, only for the rebound fell kindly for the visitors & suddenly Woodbridge were 2-0 down.

In all fairness, being 2-0 down, Woodbridge went or it, throwing Lawrence up front & bringing on 3 attacking substitutes & at least had a go with Ben Hutton hitting the crossbar. Having gone wide with one header, it was a towering header from ANDY LAWRENCE (which was reminiscent of John Toshack or Alan Shearer) that pulled a goal back on 88 minutes, Ted Nichols the supplier. However, there was no real threat of a comeback & Woodbridge didn’t do enough to warrant a point in all honesty!

Next Saturday, the reserves travel to Haverhill.

Team: Ross, Marsh, A. Lawrence, Baalham, Nichols, Toumi, Smith, Hammond, Rea (Tatum 59), Webster (Mayhew 66), Severy (Hutton 66)
