Woodbridge Town 1 Needham Market 3
Tuesday 29th September 2009
Three of four second half goals settled this League Cup tie in Needham Market's favour.
Both teams had made changes to their line up's, the visitors resting several who had made the trip to Sutton Coldfield last Saturday whilst Woodbridge had to balance the chance of progression in this competition with that in the FA Vase on Saturday with a number of players, in particular defenders, nursing knocks and injuries.

Woodbridge started very brightly and created four good chances in the first five minutes, Jay Churchyard forcing his way into the Needham penalty area but firing his shot straight into the arms of Liam Jones who then denied Ben Goddard after Aaron Churchyard had penetrated the Needham midfield. Tom Trevivian set up a chance for Chris Lay whose shot was blocked at the expense of a corner and a second Ben Seaman resulted in Lay heading over.

Woodbridge suffered a blow after a quarter of an hour, Jay Churchyard sustaining a nasty ankle injury to be replaced by Liam Scopes, himself having barely recovered from the same handicap. Lay again headed over from a corner and Jones again denied Goddard before Needham twice came close, Tommy Smith forcing a one handed save from Adam Wilson and on the stroke of half time Smith crossed and Matt Buckle's free header bounced down in front of Wilson and flew inches over the crossbar.

In the second half James Evans delivered a superb cross field pass to Darren Bethell who forced a good stop from Wilson before Evans opened the scoring for the visitors on 53 minutes, reaching a Woodbridge back pass before the advancing keeper Wilson. Woodbridge were back in the game with 15 minutes remaining, Tom Trevivian having been fouled by Tom Agricole dispatched his third penalty kick of the season and a couple of minutes later occurred an incident that appeared to change the course of a very even contest. Needham appealed for a penalty kick after Buckle went to ground in the Woodbridge box but Buckle was instead dismissed incurring a second yellow of the game for simulation. Needham's substitutes then tipped the score line back in their favour, Craig Parker bringing a good save from Wilson which was duly dispatched by Danny Smy and with two minutes remaining Evans sent the unmarked Bethell through to place through the advancing Wilson's legs for the winner.

Woodbridge Team: Adam Wilson, Sean Rea, Robbie Smythe, Tom Trevivian, Craig Stuart, Aaron Churchyard, Marcus Josiah, Jay Churchyard (Liam Scopes 15), Ben Goddard, Chris Lay, Ben Seaman.
