Leiston 2 Woodbridge Town 0
Wednesday 23rd September 2009
Despite a spirited fightback, Town paid the price for leaking two soft first half goals.
Following a delayed start, only three minutes had registered on the clock when a long throw into the Woodbridge penalty area was flicked on to the far post to present the unmarked ex Woodpecker Paul Hart with a simple conversion. Leiston's Man of the match Michael Brothers notched their second ten minutes before the break, an unwise headed clearance falling at his feet before he took the ball wide to shoot into the opposite corner from a six yard angle.

Two minutes into the second period Town were denied a very good shout for a penalty after Marcus Josiah had delivered a cross and Dan Morphew's goalbound header appeared to have been blocked by the hand of Neil Calver. Paul Berry took a first time left footed swing to a Leiston cross three minutes later but with too much elevation whilst a similar effort at the other end from Chris Pratt was safely gathered by Jamie Stannard. Town then came close to reducing the Leiston lead after Marcus Josiah chased and retrieved a long ball into the corner laying the ball back to Grant Monaghan who in turn set up Sean Rea to fire a rasping shot that pinged off the outside of the upright

Despite an equal share of six cautions on the night, Leiston were also dominant in the physical battle, successfully breaking up Town's movement time and again, whilst the free kicks gained were rarely turned to forward advantage nor amounted to anything threatening. The weekend visit of Wisbech Town to Notcutts Park is likely to provide a similar challenge to the Town's style of play as they seek to gain their vital first home points of the season.
