A New Year Hat trick for Mayhew as Town hit five

Josh Mayhew increased his goal tally to seven goals in just six starts for the Woodpeckers this season after spending a year watching from the sidelines with a knee injury. Mayhew's trio helped Woodbridge bury both ghosts of Christmas past when sloppy defending and impotent finishing had seen Woodbridge fail to win since since October. Ben Miller returned from suspension in place of the injured Chris Pratt alongside Aaron Churchyard in central defence and Robbie Smythe came in at right back as Seb Brimstead moved forward replacing Marcus Josiah on the right side of midfield and the Town back four played as big a part in the victory as their front men, demonstrating more confidence than of late. The Seasiders keeper James Waters denied Ben Seaman and Mayhew tipping both efforts out for a corner before Seaman was bundled over in the box and taking the penalty himself gave Woodbridge a 27th minute lead. That advantage might have been increased two minutes later as Sean Rea set up Seaman to deliver a cross but Brimstead's first time effort from six yards flew over the bar. Felixstowe drew level after ex-Woodpecker Luke Read delivered a free kick from the left for Duane Wright to head in at the near post. Woodbridge were denied a good shout for a second penalty after Wright appeared to control the ball with his arm with the referee unsighted, but Town were back in front on 37 minutes after David Kempson's perfect pass set up Mayhew for his second.

Glenn Snell had replaced the injured Dan Morphew just on half time and made an immediate impact shortly after the break assisting Mayhew to score Woodbridge's third from 20 yards but for the Town supporters, well experienced in not counting their chickens, things remained tense until a defensive mix up gifted Woodbridge a fourth on 77 minutes. No more than two minutes later Mayhew, with a cheeky lob from 35 yards over home keeper Waters, provided the icing on the cake and sent the Woodbridge supporters home with some New Year cheer, the astute of whom would have seen such a victory as well overdue.
