Woodbridge can count themselves unfortunate, for
having played all the football in this derby
encounter they returned home empty handed. They
lost keeper Adam Wilson before the start and
replacement Lewis Rhodes was beaten as Debenham
took an eighth minute lead when Warren
Taylor-Holt’s perfectly flighted free kick was
headed home by the unmarked Mark Powling. Louis
Johnson protected the Hornets advantage
producing a great save to turn Sean Rea’s
deflection on Liam Scopes’ set piece round the
post. Johnson denied Rea again as Woodbridge
passed the ball neatly around the difficult
Maitlands surface. The visitors’ fluent football
brought little threat in the final third and
they twice could have gifted Debenham a second
before the home side wrapped up the points. Rob
Kemp nipped in to round keeper Lewis Rhodes only
to screw his shot into the side netting and
Rhodes let Stuart Jopling’s attempted through
ball slip from his grasp but Ben Deacon got the
ball stuck under his feet as he tried to go past
the keeper. Debenham’s second came courtesy of
another free kick; Ian Gedny playing in an
unfamiliar right back role hoisted the ball
forward Stuart Jopling flicked it on and Dave
Cannon scored the first goal of his second spell
at Debenham with a right foot volley which
entered the net via the inside of the post.
