Town hit five in ten goal thriller at Wroxham
Saturday 13th October 2007
Wroxham 5 Woodbridge Town 5
Woodbridge will have returned home from Norfolk not quite sure if a point was gained or two points were dropped after a highly entertaining 90 minutes at league leaders Wroxham.
Woodbridge made one change to the side that earned a last minute FA Vase win at Deeping Rangers the previous Saturday. Lee O'Neill replaced Paul Berry, missing through illness and recent signing from Stowmarket Town Peter Richardson had an introduction to the Ridgeons Premier Division from the substitutes bench.
Lee O'Neill who scored that last minute winner at Deeping took only two minutes to find the net again from close range to give the Woodpeckers the lead and when Ben Seaman crossed from the left for O'Neill to head Woodbridge into a two goal lead on ten minutes visiting supporters were reaching for their mobile phones to text the unlikely scoreline back home.
The Yachtsmen reduced the deficit minutes later through Ben Thompson but Alllicion Blake restored the Woodpeckers two goal lead on 18 minutes and Ben Seaman added the a fourth for Woodbridge just before the half hour mark to stun the home supporters.
The goals kept coming but sadly for Woodbridge it was Wroxham who redeemed themselves after Grant Monaghan conceded a free kick which Justin Fox placed well out of Marcus Garnham's reach and three minutes before the break Josh Carus volleyed in the seventh goal of an astonishing 45 minutes.
The anticipated Wroxham second half onslaught began but their job became more difficult when Allicion Blake scored his second of the game after 49 minutes to give Woodbridge a 3-5 lead.
On the hour Woodbridge were unfortunate to be reduced to 10 men after Mark Roper was adjudged to have brought down Ben Thompson and shortly after Lee Gilman ensured a hectic finale to the game reducing the Wroxham arrears to 4-5
Woodbridge suffered injuries to Blake, Hart and Seaman who were all replaced and Wroxham's unrelenting pressure paid off with ten minutes remaining when Gary Gilmore scoring the tenth and final goal to keep their unbeaten league start intact.
Woodbridge who after becoming the first opposing team to score five in a competitive fixture at Wroxham since March 1991 will no doubt make several changes in Tuesday's Churchman Cup fixture with Grundisburgh as injuries take their toll and with five players representing the county squad at Under 18's on Thursday, two days before Needham Market visit Notcutts Park looking to extend their 100% start to the season.
Team: M. Garnham, Sheppard, Monaghan, Scales, Roper, Miller, Churchyard, Hart , Blake, O'Neill, Seaman. Used Subs: Richardson, Hillyard, Read.
