Skipper Scales volleyed home at the far post
despite the efforts of a defender to clear off
the line after Jon Bickers had flicked on a
left-wing corner by Ben Seaman after 63 minutes.
Although both sides had chances to win the game
thereafter, most notably Woodbridge substitute
Craig Jennings in the 90th minute, a draw was a
fair result from a poor quality match littered
with too many mistakes.
Wisbech had stunned Woodbridge by taking the
lead with 13 minutes gone when right-back Lewis
Cook, who had broken forward and sent a cross
right across the face of the Woodbridge goal as
early as the third minute, beat Marcus Garnham
with a dipping shot from just outside the area.
Visiting keeper Chris Horton
had to spread himself to block a close-range
effort from Allicion Blake after five minutes
and also the follow-up from Aaron Churchyard.
Horton was beaten in the 19th
minute when Blake shook off his marker as he
broke down the inside left channel on to Dean
Tournay-Godfrey's perfectly-weighted through
pass and the striker lifted the ball over the
advancing keeper but also just over the bar.
A minute later Horton dived to
his right to tip a Bickers shot round the post
at the expense of a corner, before Wisbech hit
back and Mark Jimson's dipping volley was saved
by Marcus Garnham at the second attempt and
James McManus then fired over the bar.
A through ball by Gerard Nash
set Tournay-Godfrey free and his low drive was
saved by Horton down to his right with Blake
unable to pounce on the loose ball.
Another defence-splitting pass
by Nash three minutes later saw Horton rush off
his line but he spilled the ball and Seaman
struck the outside of the near post from an
angle.
Lee O'Neill replaced Blake,
who appeared to be struggling with injury, at
the start of the second half as Woodbridge
looked to find a way back into the match.
Scales sliced a shot wide from
a Seaman corner in the 58th minute after Nash's
shot was deflected wide before Tournay-Godfrey
headed wide from a right-wing Seaman free-kick,
but five minutes later Scales netted the
equaliser.
Stuart Ablett's powerful
right-wing effort was caught by Marcus Garnham
at the second attempt as Wisbech tried to regain
the ascendency.
Tournay-Godfrey's header was
straight at Horton from Stefan Marsh's cross
from the right and then Seaman cut in from the
same wing and forced Horton into a save before
the visiting keeper produced the best save of
the match, diving to his left, to thwart Nash's
header when the ball was played back in
following a free kick.
Marcus Garnham parried
substitute Darren Edey's shot with 10 minutes to
go before the best chance of the afternoon fell
to Jennings in the finals minute of normal time
but, with the goal at his mercy, he contrived to
lift the ball over the bar from eight yards out.
Even the addition of a
generous 10 minutes' injury time failed to find
a winner as both sides had to settle for a point
apiece.
