 FA VASE 1ST ROUND REPLAY
.
Woodbridge Town 0 Wembley 2
Tuesday 20th November 2007
WEMBLEY were deserved winners of this replay, although it took the visitors until the 87th minute before confirming their place in the third round.
Some of the Wembley players endured a nightmare journey to Suffolk, opting to travel by train only to find it had been cancelled and having to catch the next one, eventually arriving at Notcutts Park five minutes before the scheduled kick-off.

It was agreed to delay the start half-an-hour and so the match, which was subject of a late afternoon pitch inspection after persistent rainfall throughout the day, finally went ahead at 8.15pm.

The heavy pitch suited the physically stronger visitors and they were the better side throughout the contest, and no-one would begrudge Wembley their right to travel to Greenwich Borough in the next round after inflicting Glenn Read's first defeat as Woodbridge manager.

Indeed, if Marcus Garnham had not made several smart saves the outcome would have been decided earlier and the margin of victory even greater.

The match also marked the senior debut of Stefan Marsh, an 82nd minute substitute, who showed his promise as Woodbridge's FA Vase hopes were laid to rest for another season.
The only surprise of the opening period was that it took Wembley so long to open the scoring, the breakthrough eventually coming in the 42nd minute thanks to a fine right-foot finish by Paul Shelton.

The livewire striker, by his own admission afterwards, missed several chances, the first coming in the 12th minute when strike partner Jeffrey Dalton-Brown played in Shelton and he skipped around Marcus Garnham but saw his goalbound shot cleared off the line by the covering Mark Roper.

Both strikers found space in behind the Woodbridge defence to exploit and Shelton should have done better three minutes later when he failed to lift a lob over Marcus Garnham.
Woodbridge then threatened when Arran Sheppard sent over a good right-wing cross and Paul Berry elected to take it on his chest rather than head for goal first time and saw the ball nicked away by a defender.

Almost immediately Luke Read, who had an outstanding first half, made space for himself before shooting into the arms of Marc Talbot.

Dalton-Brown got in behind the home defence in the 20th minute but his shot was comfortably saved by Marcus Garnham and six minutes later the same player saw his effort from the centre circle drift just wide after a crossfield pass stopped in the surface water. Shelton passed up another opportunity on the half hour before he made one count three minutes prior to the interval, cutting in from the left past two defenders before finding the far corner of the net.

Woodbridge, just as they had done in the first tie, steped up the pace at the start of the second half and had chances to equalise.
Tony Boto saw his shot deflected over the bar for a corner from Berry's low driven cross from the right in the 52nd minute and three minutes later Read's shot from Berry's cross was deflected wide.

Perhaps Woodbridge's most clearcut chance of the night came on the hour when Jamie Scales found Boto who set up Berry but his well-struck shot thudded into the chest of Talbot, who also got down to his left to save from Boto seven minutes later.

Woodbridge, who had missed Aaron Churchyard's all-action style in the middle of the park, made a double substitution in the 72nd minute, but it was Wembley substitute Daren Butler was was narrowly off target two minutes later.

Ian Bates, the visitors' skipper, then curled a free-kick over the wall which Marcus Garnham dived to save before Shelton went wide with a shot on the turn.
Wembley sealed their place in the next round with three minutes remaining, Butler's cross shot being pushed away by Marcus Garnham into the path of substitute Joel Bevis, who turned home the rebound.

Woodbridge: Marcus Garnham, Arran Sheppard, Mark Roper, Jon Bickers, Grant Monaghan, Paul Hart, Luke Read, Paul Berry (sub Ben Garnham 72 mins), Jamie Scales (sub Stefan Marsh 82 mins), Lee O'Neill (sub Craig Jennings 72 mins), Tony Boto. Unused subs: Tom Ross, Sean Rea.
