The Pedlars completed a comfortable league
double over the Woodpeckers, who only briefly
sparked to life at the start of the second
period against opponents who worked hard and
closed them down quickly.
Woodbridge fell
behind as early as the sixth minute when David
Greenwood's curling cross from the left wing
appeared to go straight in, but Kieran Doherty
claimed the goal after getting the faintest of
touches with his head.
Ricky Muggleton
twice went close for the home side in the space
of three minutes, heading just wide at the near
post and then getting away from Ben Miller down
the right and crossing dangerously into the box
where Arran Sheppard headed clear.
It was the 25th
minute before Woodbridge threatened when Paul
Hart was fouled outside the penalty area on the
left at the end of a good passing move. Hart
took the free kick himself but his effort dipped
just over the bar.
Woodbridge could
have fallen further behind on the half hour when
a short corner saw Dean Symonds' cross reach
Gary Setchell and his header struck the
underside of the bar before being scrambled
clear.
Hart, playing up
front in the absence of Allicion Blake, shot
over the bar on the turn at the other end
following a Mark Roper cross in the 33rd minute
before Swaffham broke through the visitors'
defence and Nigel Julien saw his shot strike the
underside of the bar and Sheppard cleared to
safety.
Julien, whose
pace and tricky proved a handful for Woodbridge
all afternoon, was denied by Marcus Garnham
diving to his right just before half time.
A goal down at
the break, Woodbridge went to three-at-the-back
in the second half with Stefan Marsh coming on
and Roper going up front in a bold bid to get
back into the match with the wind behind them
but playing up the slope.
Woodbridge
started the half well, although Symonds served
notice of the danger posed by Swaffham when he
sent a shot just over the bar in the 52nd
minute.
Swaffham doubled
their lead five minutes later when Marsh slid
into a tackle and won the ball but was injured
and Doherty took advantage of the shortage of
defensive cover to round last man Grant Monaghan
and steer his shot wide of Marcus Garnham.
Woodbridge protests that Marsh had been fouled
were waved aside and the goal stood.
The destination
of the points was all but settled three minutes
later when the livewire Julien timed his run to
perfection to stay onside and take the ball
round Marcus Garnham before slotting home from
an angle.
Substitute Craig
Jennings spurned Woodbridge's only clear-cut
chance of the match, shooting straight at David
Potter after Sean Rea's run and cross from the
right saw a defender knock the ball straight
into his path after 75 minutes.
Marcus Garnham
had produced a good save to deny Julien before
that and twice after thwarted the diminutive
striker after he got in behind the defence as
Swaffham came close to adding to their tally.
Woodbridge Town:
Marcus Garnham, Arran Sheppard (sub Stefan Marsh
46 mins), Grant Monaghan, Sean Rea, Mark Roper,
Ben Miller, Luke Read, Aaron Churchyard, Paul
Hart (sub Ben Garnham 70 mins), Lee O'Neill, Ben
Seaman (sub Craig Jennings 63 mins).
