A goal by Ray Turner just past the hour mark was
sufficient to give Stanway all three points, but
the margin of victory could have been greater.
Both sides had chances in an opening and
entertaining opening period but some poor
finishing contributed to keeping the scoreline
blank.Woodbridge, with
Sean Rea making an impressive full league debut
in midfield, looked good going forward but could
not round off some promising moves.
Ben Seaman lifed his shot over
the bar after 20 minutes following a good move
down the left wing and then Grant Monaghan saw
his header go agonisingly wide of the far post
after Paul Hart turned well and crossed, before
Hart saw his shot from the edge of the area dip
just over.
Stanway, who had to make two
substitutions inside the opening half an hour,
replied through Jason Carter, forcing Marcus
Garnham to block his shot with his legs and Ed
Kirby's well-struck 25-yard shot which was
straight at the keeper.
Hart, on the stretch, lifted
his shot over the bar after 35 minutes following
the best move of the match, again down the
left-hand side.
Stanway started the second half brightly and
fashioned some half chances before finally
making one count when Sam Newson broke down the
left after Simon Peddie lost a tackle and his
cross was powerfully headed home by the unmarked
Turner.
Seaman passed up a gilt-edged
chance to equalise just two minutes later after
Hart caught Aaron Skeggs in possession and
played in Seaman in a good position on the left
but his shot was wide of the near post.
With Gerard Nash and Jon
Bickers unable to get a grip on the midfield as
they had done in the first half and substitutes
Dean Tournay-Godfrey and Craig Jennings failing
to make any impact up front, Woodbridge never
seriously threatened an equaliser thereafter.
Kirby saw a shot deflected
just wide at the other end and Angelo Harrop,
who was impressive throughout, saw a low effort
saved by Marcus Garnham before Peddie hooked
over the bar after keeper Michael Church parried
down a Seaman corner.
Stanway almost made it 2-0 in
the 75th minute when Sam Newson showed good pace
to get away from Mark Roper and saw his shot
strike the base of the far post.
