WOODBRIDGE were left to rue not scoring when they were on top in the second period as Stanway broke away to seal the three points.

In fairness, if Stanway had taken their chances they could have been out of sight long before their second goal arrived in the 75th minute against the run of play.

Woodbridge were caught pushing forward in search of an equaliser when a counter-attack saw Sam Newson break away down the right before he squared the ball to Ray Turner who stabbed home.

It was Sam Newon who had put Stanway ahead five minutes before half time when he pulled a crossfield pass down and then lashed a dipping 35-yard shot over Marcus Garnham and into the top scorner of the net for a truly spectacular goal.

Either side of that Stanway had chances to have added to their tally, but some smart goalkeeping by Marcus Garnham kept Woodbridge in the match.

He saved low down to his left after just three minutes from Rob Thorne's drive but was beaten two minutes later by Ray Turner's sweetly-struck left-foot shot that thumped against a post. Turner's effort from the rebound was wide of the target.

The strikers combined in the 21st minute, Thorne flicking the ball through and Garnham saving from Turner with his legs, and the Woodbridge keeper also denied Thorne when he saved his attempted lob in first-half injury time.

Woodbridge posed little by way of an attacking threat playing up the slope and against the wind in the first period, although Lee O'Neill should have got his head to a curling free-kick by Gerard Nash in the 26th minute and the pair combined well down the left wing two minutes before Newson's opener but no-one was able to get on the end of Nash's dangerous cross.

Marcus Garnham saved at the second attempt from Michael Burch's header upon the resumption and then he beat away Ben Newson's fierce drive as Stanway opened strongly.
The introduction of Ben Seaman after 56 minutes in place of Pete Richardson, who found the going tough after recently returning from a long spell on the sidelines, pepped up Woodbridge in attack.

Marcus Garnham again saved well on the hour, this time tipping Thorne's shot on the turn over the bar for a corner, before a good run down the left by Seaman saw him pull the ball back into the danger zone but O'Neill could not get on the end of it.

A minute later Seaman crossed from the left and O'Neill, in space, should have done better than direct his downward header straight at Stanway keeper Michael Church.

Nash then played in Seaman and he shot against the keeper's legs as Woodbridge threatened an equaliser, but any hopes of drawing level were undone when Stanway broke smartly to score their second.

Simon Peddie was booked for dissent after contesting a handball decision given against him ten minutes from time and three minutes later Church scrambled Nash's free-kick round the post.

Even a consolation goal was not forthcoming in time added on when Seaman shot wide when clean through to complete a disappointing afternoon for the Woodpeckers.
