Woodbridge Town 1 Soham Town Rangers 1
Saturday 5th January 2008
ANY FEARS that Woodbridge supporters may have held of a repeat drubbing following their 9-1 defeat in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season failed to materialise.
Indeed, Soham only rescued a point thanks to a scrambled goal in the fifth of seven minutes of time added on to earn a deserved share of the spoils.

The visitors, who arrived at Notcutts Park in second place, did not look like title challengers for the majority of the opening period, although they did miss a penalty. That came in the 28th minute when Lee O'Neill lost possession to the impressive Michael Simpson on the edge of the Woodbridge area and in trying to retrieve his mistake he brought down the midfielder in the box.

However, Marcus Garnham dived to his right to parry away Andy Furnell's spot kick to prevent the visitors taking the lead with their first real effort on goal.

Woodbridge had earlier twice come close to taking the lead, the first in the sixth minute when Craig Jennings saw his sweetly-struck volley bring a good reflex save out of Lee Jordan and Dean Tournay-Godfrey's lob from the rebound bounced off the top of the bar.

The visiting keeper had to show his agility again in the 15th minute, arching backwards to keep the ball out after Jennings challenged Martin McNeil on the edge of the area and the ball appeared to be looping just under the bar.

Furnell should have done better when he curled an effort over the bar five minutes after his penalty miss and then Marcus Garnham came out to clear as Furnell bore down on goal and saved Charlie Libam's follow-up effort.

The keeper also saved a looping header from Scott Johnson and Furnell volleyed over Libam's right-wing cross as the half came to a close.

Soham upped the tempo at the start of the second half, Martin Bromwich's 25-yard drive forcing a fine diving save from Marcus Garnham before Libam hit a powerful rising drive over the bar and then saw a low effort on the turn deflected for a corner.

A good through ball by Mark Roper set Jennings clear through the middle in the 59th minute and he did well to get a shot on target, but it was straight at Jordan before Woodbridge took the lead agaisnt the run of play three minutes later. A left-wing corner by Jennings was flicked on by Stefan Marsh and Paul Hart did well to toe-poke the ball into the bottom far corner of the net.

Roper, who was feeling unwell, was substituted, which forced Woodbridge to reorganise in defence, Grant Monaghan slotting in at left back with Ben Miller, who made an accomplished return to the side, switching to the middle.

Simpson and Libam saw chances come and go and then Miller sent a 35-yarder just over the bar at the other end in a rare Woodbridge attack as Soham turned the screw.

Callum Kearns blasted over the angle of the post and bar before Marcus Garnham thwarted Darren Jimson, Simon Flanz and Stuart Williams with three good saves in a frantic finale.
Just when it seemed Woodbridge had weathered the storm, and with four-and-a-half of the seven minutes of injury time played, substitute Andy Coleman forced the ball home after the home team had failed to clear a left-wing corner.

Woodbridge team: Marcus Garnham, Aaron Churchyard, Stefan Marsh, Mark Roper (sub Grant Monaghan 72 mins), Ben Miller, Lee O'Neill, Paul Hart (sub Ben Garnham 87 mins), Luke Read, Jamie Scales, Dean Tournay-Godfrey, Craig Jennings (sub Ishmael Toumi 75 mins). Unused subs: Tom Ross, Andy Lawrence.
