After the dire display in the 2-0 defeat at home
to Newmarket last Saturday, Woodbridge produced
a performance to be proud of at Bloomfields.
It is fair to say that on another
night Needham could have scored six or seven
goals, such was the number of chances they
created, but Woodbridge's resilience had to be
admired.
They were 2-0 ahead inside the opening 20
minutes and managed to restrict Needham to a
solitary reply in the remaining 70 minutes
despite their hosts spending the majority of the
match camped around the Woodbridge penalty area.
Goalkeeper Marcus Garnham
produced an inspired display and the back four
all stuck to their task as Needham launched wave
after wave of attacks.
Three times in the first half
Marcus Garnham punched clear goal-bound headers
by former Woodbridge player Mark Bailey and he
also produced a top-class save to deny Mark
Heath-Preston, tipping his effort round the
post. That save was vital as within a minute
Woodbridge had doubled their advantage.
The visitors went ahead in the
13th minute just after claims for a Needham
penalty were waved aside when Marcus Garnham
appeared to make contact as Heath-Preston tried
to go round him after he chased on to a long
ball.
Paul Hart's precise ball
inside full back Ben Wake created space for
Aaron Churchyard to square for the unmarked
Allicion Blake to score into an empty net.
Five minutes later Churchyard
scored number two, sending a looping header
beyond Liam Jones following Ben Seaman's
left-wing cross.
Marcus Garnham saved Tommy
Smith's low drive before the break and then
ex-Woodbridge midfielder Paul Berry's free-kick
straight after the resumption before Needham
thought they had reduced the deficit when Jay
Denniss headed home only for the effort to be
disallowed for handball.
They did pull one back in the
64th minute through Smith, who volleyed home
following a knock-down, and then Richard
Butler's header from a Berry corner went just
wide.
Mark Roper, who was feeling
groggy after suffering a head injury, was
replaced in the 73rd minute and Needham
substitute Danny Thrower saw his effort go right
across the face of the Woodbridge goal with five
minutes remaining.
Needham became more desperate
in the closing stages but Woodbridge survived
six minutes of time added on to claim all three
points.
Woodbridge manager Glenn Read
said of his side's much-improved display: "I
can't really put my finger on it. One day we can
go out and lose to an SIL team and then come
here and a beat a top-of-the-table team.
"We have several youngsters
and they can blow hot and cold, and having Jon
Bickers in defence helped because he is a good
talker.
"We had to dig in and defend
for a good part of the game, but all credit to
the players."
