Berry free kick earns Town a share of the spoils
Saturday 04 November 2007
Woodbridge Town 1 Haverhill Rovers 1
PAUL Berry curled home a sublime free-kick 15 minutes from time to earn Woodbridge a deserved share of the spoils.
Berry's 20-yard effort, which left visiting keeper Arron Benstead rooted to the spot, equalised Colin Vowden's 10th minute opener for the visitors.
Vowden's near-post header from a long throw-in on the right looped into the far corner of the net to give Rovers the lead with the first effort on goal after an even opening to the match.
Woodbridge took a while to get over going a goal behind but really should have equalised after 17 minutes when a determined run by Aaron Churchyard took him into the penalty area where he square for Lee O'Neill whose half-hit shot was cleared off the line.
Paul Hart then shot wide from 25 yards before he saw a curling free-kick over the wall comfortably collected by Benstead.
Sam Green's 25-yard shot was straight at Marcus Garnham at the other end before Bentead twice denied O'Neill an equaliser in quick succession.
Berry provided the pass to put O'Neill in on goal but the keeper came out quickly to block at the expense of a corner. Berry's flag kick was headed goalwards by Tony Boto and Benstead smothered O'Neill's shot on the turn in the last meaningful action of the opening half.
Haverhill started the second period the stronger and Marc Abbott fed Adam Ben-Saud but his effort was straight at Marcus Garnham.
The impressive Nick Impey then took a crossfield pass on his chest and beat two defenders before firing across the face of goal with Ben-Saud unable to get a touch.
Ben-Saud drilled a shot over the bar before he should have increased the visitors' advantage, going round Marcus Garnham but shooting into the sidenetting from an angle.
Ben Miller then replaced Grant Monaghan, with skipper Jamie Scales moving to left back, and three minutes later the home side came close to drawing level when O'Neill's right-wing cross saw Benstead save Boto's close-range shot with his legs.
Rovers came within inches of scoring a second in the 74th minute when Impey laid the ball off to Ben-Saud and his shot on the turn struck the underside of the bar and came out.
Woodbridge went straight down the other end and substitute Craig Jennings burst past two defenders but saw his shot hit the foot of the far post with Benstead beaten.
However, Woodbridge were level within a minute when Berry's well-placed free-kick found the top corner of the net.
Hart headed over a left-wing cross by Scales and another inviting cross by the captain saw appeals for a penalty waved aside as O'Neill was blocked.
Ben-Saud headed over the bar from Impey's cross in injury time as both sides collected a point.
