Felixstowe & Walton United 4 Woodbridge Town 1
Tuesday 06 November 2007
Paul Hart's late goal was a mere consolation as Woodbridge were punished by their ex team mates. Hart forced the ball over the line following a corner kick in the last minute after ex Town players Liam Scopes, Danny Phillips and Dwayne Edwards had scored twice in each half for the Seasiders.
Late arrival Jon Bickers was replaced at centre back before kick off by Ben Miller and Luke Read returned to the side following his county duties at the weekend. For the first time this season Woodbridge fielded a full complement of substitutes with Sean Rea and Jack Severy joining Grant Monaghan, Jon Bickers and Craig Jennings on the bench.
Danny Phillips earned Felixstowe a corner in the first minute from which they took the lead when Liam Scopes bundled the ball over the line after his initial effort was saved by Marcus Garnham.
Precious little goal action was witnessed in the next 35 minutes, efforts from Keith Hetherington, Dwayne Edwards and Neil Calver were easy saves for Marcus Garnham and the game was 25 minutes old before Paul Hart sent Woodbridge's first effort over the bar from distance.
Ben Miller's suffered more injury problems as he limped off on the half hour to be replaced by Grant Monaghan but Woodbridge did see out the last 15 minutes of the half with their best spell of the game. Paul Berry made a surging run through midfield before making a pass to the left to Lee O'Neill who cut into the penalty area and delivered a shot to the far post which was well saved by Paul Cudworth. Paul Berry then sent an effort goalwards from 22 yards and Allicion Blake met a corner kick with an overhead kick but both efforts were the wrong side of the crossbar.
In stoppage time Felixstowe increased their lead when Danny Phillips curled a fine effort out of reach of Marcus Garnham from the left edge of the penalty area.
With only five minutes played after the restart Woodbridge had used all three substitutes as Craig Jennings and Jon Bickers replaced Allicion Blake and Arran Sheppard. Woodbridge again struggled to threaten Felixstowe where it mattered, in the final third, and the best effort of the half was a Lee O'Neill shot from 25 yards which was tipped over by Cudworth.
On the hour, the game was over as a contest when an unmarked Dwayne Edwards gratefully accepted an assist along the six yard box from Danny Phillips and on 80 minutes Liam Scopes scored Felixstowe's fourth with another long range effort, his 25 yard dipping shot just out of reach of Garnham.
Paul Berry tried his luck from 20 yards but his drive was again tipped over by Cudworth with five minutes remaining before Paul Hart's completed the evenings scoring with a minute remaining for Woodbridge's consolation.
With no first team match until the FA Vase trip to Wembley, Woodbridge now have 10 days to ensure a full squad is fit for their most important match of the season to date and to address their attacking shortcomings and generous defence on the training ground.
