Young Guns perform well but Town bow out of League Cup
Tuesday 2nd October 2007
Woodbridge Town 1 Diss Town 2
A YOUTHFUL Woodbridge Town side were unlucky to go down to Division One Diss Town on Tuesday night.
With one eye on Saturday's FA Vase tie at Deeping Rangers and the other on developing some of the young talent at the club, Woodbridge made eight changes to the team that had defeated Histon Reserves on Saturday.
They gave debuts to four players - right back Sean Rea, midfielder Ismael Toumi and strikers Jack Severy and Peter Richardson, who had only joined the club from Stowmarket Town at the weekend.
Toumi and defenders Mark Roper, Ben Miller and Jamie Scales were the only four players to take the field who were over 19 years of age - and although defeated the Young Guns can take a lot of credit for the way they performed.
They did not get off to the best of starts, falling a goal behind inside three minutes when Isaac Robinson, who appeared to be clearly in an offside position, broke away before crossing for Ben Deacon to sidefoot home.
Woodbridge were undaunted and started to knock the ball around well, although their attacks fizzled out too often in the final third of the pitch.
Goalkeeper Tom Ross, making only his second senior appearance, was left exposed by Ben Miller's back pass and Alan North nipped in to intercept but lobbed just wide of the near post.
Deacon then volleyed over from Josh Hull's cross to the far post before Richardson, who displayed some good hold-up play, saw an effort deflected wide for a corner.
Ben Garnham, who had missed the previous two matches with a back injury, was forced to retire with 43 minutes gone just before North almost doubled Diss' advantage, reacting quicker than Ross to a knockdown to stab his shot against the foot of the near post.
Woodbridge responded with Rea setting up Luke Read, whose shot went across the face of goal and wide of the far post as the first half came to a close.
However, the Woodpeckers were level eight minutes into the second period when Severy, with his back to goal, was hauled down and Roper stepped up to calmly slot home the resultant spot kick.
Miller then saw his back header saved by Michael Hilton from a left-wing corner taken by Scales, who along with Roper was replaced on the hour.
Deacon saw two headers go off target in the 73rd and 80th minutes, but inbetween Diss scored what proved to be the winning goal when veteran skipper Dale Vince bundled home Stuart Jenkinson's left-wing corner.

Woodbridge: Tom Ross, Sean Rea, Mark Roper (sub Arran Sheppard 60 mins), Ben Miller, Jamie Scales (sub Grant Monaghan 60 mins), Luke Read, Ismael Toumi, Liam Hillyard, Ben Garnham (sub Aaron Churchyard 43 mins), Jack Severy, Peter Richardson.
