Wake up call for Town in opener at the Abbey
Stadium |
| Saturday 11th August 2007 |
| CRC 4 Woodbridge Town 0 |
| WOODBRIDGE were on the receiving end of an opening day wake-up call at the Abbey Stadium on
Saturday. CRC, who struggled at the foot of the table last season, will surely surprise a few opponents this time around if they can continue this level of performance.
The home team fully merited their four-goal victory, and it was only the goalkeeping Marcus Garnham that prevented an even more one-sided final
scoreline. |
|
| Woodbridge had no answer to the pace of 17-year-old striker Robbie
Willmott, who looks as though he has a very bright future in the game. In addition to notching a hat-trick he struck the crossbar from fully 30 yards with a free-kick and went close on no less than six other occasions! |
| Marcus Garnham had already saved from Willmott after he cut in from the left before his pace took him clear of the Woodbridge defence and around the keeper to open the scoring with 11 minutes played. |
| Allicion Blake failed to get enough power in an effort to trouble Sam Beagle, who then lost possession as he dribbled out of his area but then scrambled back to save Tony Boto’s weak effort when the unmarked Blake was calling for the ball. |
| Woodbridge had only themselves to blame when they fell further behind in the 34th minute as Ben Miller scythed down Craig Blussens in full flight just inside the area and Willmott sent Marcus Garnham the wrong way from the spot. |
Miller, who was booked, was substituted at half time along with Ben Garnham as Woodbridge tried to find a foothold in the game, but any such hopes were laid to rest just six minutes after the restart when Woodbridge lost possession from their own corner and CRC broke with both pace and precision for Willmott to sidefoot home for his hat-trick.
|
| Marcus Garnham saved twice more from
Willmott, who also curled a free-kick just wide before Sam Culter’s low 30-yard drive in the 75th minute underlined the home team’s superiority on an afternoon Woodbridge will quickly want to forget. |
