Woodbridge Town produced an amazing comeback to
win the game after being three goals down at half time. |
|
They found themselves two goals down after only
three minutes when in only the first minute Valter
Rocha lobbed over Woodbridge keeper Tom Sills to
open the scoring. Thetford made it 2-0 when Kyle
Parish beat the offside trap and finished with
an accurate shot. Rocha then shot over after 13
minutes as the away team dominated the early
stages. Liam Scopes shot went over for the home team
after 16 minutes. Arron Holden then came close after
23 minutes for Thetford. Luke Bailey's cross was
well held by Sills after 38 minutes. Mark Roper's
header went just over after 40 minutes and Scopes'
shot was on target after 40 minutes for the
Woodpeckers but the away team scored a third after
42 minutes when Parish headed home from the edge of
the area.
Woodbridge were a different team in the second half
and Scopes' effort went just over after 47 minutes
but a minute later his header was deflected in by
Aaron Churchyard to pull a goal back. Scopes' header
was deflected wide for a corner after 53 minutes as
Woodbridge piled on the pressure. They promptly made
it 3-2 after 54 minutes when James Churchill's
corner was again met by Churchyard who easily beat
Thetford keeper Ian Fancett. Roper's cross then hit
the bar after 64 minutes and Scopes again tested
Fancett after 71 minutes. Roper's free kick went
just over after 80 minutes but Churchill hit an
accurate shot from an angle to equalise after 84
minutes. James Hubbard's persistence after 88
minutes paid off when he beat the defender and
finished superbly to make it 4-3 and all credit to
Woodbridge who proved a game is not over at 3-0. |

|
This was Haverhill's first win for four weeks,
their last one being over the same side as they completed the
double over Woodbridge |
|
and returned to the home form they have been missing
of late.
Haverhill
took the lead in the 18th minute following a through
ball from Ross Elkins, Jack Wilkinson drilling a
blockbuster 25 yard effort into the far top right
corner past goalkeeper Tom Sills.
Some excellent saves from home 'keeper Ed Wootten
kept his side in the lead until they doubled it
after 56 minutes, Neil Cogger being played in and,
using the outside of his left boot 15 yards out, he
left Sills unable to do anything but slow the ball
with his hand on its way to goal.
The final goal came three minutes later from the
penalty spot, Ben Miller bringing down Jack Higgs in
the Woodbridge penalty area and the returning Dan
Cornwell netting from the kick.

Woodbridge started well and the dangerous Aaron
Greenwood was fouled just outside the penalty area
after 11 minutes with the resulting free kick going
over the bar. However after 13 minutes the winger
was brought down yet again inside the area. Liam
Scopes stepped up but his penalty was well parried
by Walsham keeper Duncan Mcanally. The home team
threatened after 18 minutes when Jack Brame's shot
was well saved by Woodbridge keeper Tom Sills.
Walsham took the lead against the run of play after
20 minutes when Ollie Hughes shot from the edge of
the area beat Sills. The Woodpeckers immediately hit
back after 21 minutes when Aaron Churchyard's pass
to Kelsey Trotter and his shot went wide. Greenwood
went off injured on the half hour after a bad tackle
and Trotter came close after 39 minutes when his
shot was well saved by Mcanally. Hughes came close
again after 43 minutes but his shot was again well
saved by Sills.

time when Hughes' cross was met by Shaun Thorrold

Saturday 15th

|
|
With Woodbridge's recent form the
hopes for another three points looked good in the mid-table
clash at Norwich United. |
|
Woodbridge started
strong keeping possession from the off, before
losing out to Shipley. This saw Norwich on the
counter attack, with a great lofted through ball to
Bluth who looked certain to score, but struck high.
The next five minutes of the game were dominated by
Norwich with some great midfield possession and
passing, this saw a great move into the Woodbridge
town box to only be struck wide by Norwich's Hunter.
Woodbridge started to look stronger and more settled
after being on the back foot, this saw great build
up play involving the whole of midfield before
passing wide for Ben Miller to deliver a poor cross.
Norwich who had started well seemed to be finding
that form again with some great wing play, leading
to their first goal. A brilliantly timed ball from
Hunter to meet the head of Bluth. From the kick off
Woodbridge looked like they wanted a goal back,
fighting for the ball more and keeping possession
much better, this led to few chances but one of the
best in the game, with Kelsey Trotter through on
goal being saved, came back out to Ryan Stafford
where it was cleared off the line by Hunter, half
time came and the game looked open for both teams.
Second half underway
and Woodbridge looked strong, some good play and a
good chance which James Hubbard hit high, this left
some space in Woodbridge's defence which Norwich
looked to use, but a last ditch challenge from Craig
Stuart saw Woodbridge safe. The rest of the game was
a midfield battle of who could keep the ball longest
and create space and in the 89th minute this is what
Woodbridge did, with a great run from Ben Miller
into the box and being brought down for a Woodbridge
Town penalty. Substitute Liam Scopes stepped up to
the spot and converted with a neat finish into the
bottom corner. Could Woodbridge snatch a winner?
This is what they attempted, with a great effort
from James Hubbard winning Woodbridge a corner which
was deflected wide for another corner. After 3
corners the ball was cleared and the full time
whistle blown. |

Woodbridge Town started the game
with Liam Scopes and Aaron Churchyard up front |

due to injuries and
unavailability but were unable to gain a deserved
second goal and found Godmanchester keeper Rob
Mackney in inspired form.
The home team opened the scoring against the run of

Woodbridge
Town had to settle for point after being ahead in the game
twice. |
|
Missing the injured Paul Berry, Paul Hart and Mark
Ray and with Glyn Dixon suspended and Liam Scopes
playing as a centre forward the Woodpeckers were
unlucky not to pick up all three points.
Kirkley Centre forward Ryan Crisp's shot went over
the bar in the second minute. Woodbridge replied
after 5 minutes when James Hubbard's shot failed to
trouble Kirkley keeper Jordan Smith. Scopes' header
was on target after 12 minutes and Adam Clarke's
cross was met by Hubbard but his shot went wide.
Scopes was again on target after 24 minutes but the
dangerous Crisp's cross shot was well saved by
Woodbridge keeper Tom Sills a minute later. Ryan
Stafford's corner was then met by Darcy D'eath but
his header failed to hit the target after 36
minutes. On the stroke of half time Woodbridge
opened the scoring when Ben Miller's shot was
deflected in by Scopes.
After 58 minutes Michael Tacon's header came close
for the visitors but Crisp made no mistake after 61
minutes with a powerful header past Sills. After 66
minutes the Woodpeckers retook the lead when
Hubbard's cross was met by Ryan Stafford who made no
mistake with an excellent volley. Hubbard came close
again after 70 minutes when his header crashed
against the crossbar. After 84 minutes Kyle Baker's
effort went over the bar for the visitors and the
hard working Hubbard's industry created the chance
for Woodbridge but his shot went wide. After 88
minutes the visitors equalised when Tarren Grint's
cross was headed in by Crisp. Substitute Aaron
Greenwood's pinpoint cross was met by Scopes in the
last seconds but he failed to find the target. |

MILDENHALL TOWN 2 WOODBRIDGE TOWN

|
Mildenhall climbed to the top of
the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division for the first time in five
years after a hard-fought win over Woodbridge. |
|
In a tight first half,
the visitors had the first of few chances after ten
minutes. Aaron Churchyard’s shot squirmed through
goalkeeper Josh Pope’s grasp, but Adarian Judge
recovered to clear off the line. The home side grew
stronger as the half wore on, inspired by the
excellent James Paterson, and it was his tackle that
led to the opening goal on 26 minutes. The ball ran
to Andrew Wood, who dispatched a stunning strike
into the roof of the net from 25 yards.
The defining spell of the match came in the three
minutes just after the hour mark. First a Paterson
pass released Wood on goal, but a heavy touch let
down the striker, and within 30 seconds Michael
Harvey tripped Tom Trevivian at the other end to
concede a penalty, which was duly converted to
equalise. But parity lasted just a minute, with Kris
Thomas bursting down the right flank before
delivering a perfect cross for Wood to head home.
Without the leadership of skipper Dave Werthmann,
forced off by injury in the first half, Mildenhall
dropped very deep in the final 20 minutes as the
away side pushed hard for a leveller. But Harvey and
Judge defended manfully and Woodbridge had only two
Paul Hart headers – which both drifted wide – to
show for their efforts.

WIVENHOE TOWN 3 WOODBRIDGE TOWN
0 |
|
It was a
classic ‘game of two halves’ at Broad Lane as Woodbridge
dominated the first half but then conceded three second half
goals to the rampant Dragons. |
|
The Woodpeckers might have gone ahead after just 3
minutes when they were awarded a penalty for an
apparent trip. However, Roper hit the spot-kick too
close to Richie Robins, who dived to his right to
gather the ball comfortably. The Dragons were
limited to occasional breakaways whilst Robins saved
well from a Gilfedder header and with his feet when
Churchyard was through on goal.
Woodbridge continued their neat passing game in the
second half but on 53 minutes conceded a free kick
on the right. Blanchett whipped in a cross which
appeared to be diverted into the goal by Dadds;
Dadds was flagged offside but the ball was adjudged
to have gone straight in. Woodbridge were rattled by
the goal and Wivenhoe took advantage as within a
minute Dadds crossed from the right and Tom Moore
crashed the ball into the roof of the net at the far
post. Moore was the villain on the hour however as
he was sent off for a second yellow card and in the
ensuing melee ‘keeper Dixon received a straight red
after hitting out at Parkin.
Ten-a-side suited Wivenhoe and on 73 minutes a
superb interplay of passes down the right ended with
Lampon laying the ball back to Butcher who hit a
fine rising shot past Sills from 12 yards. |

|
He opened the scoring after 11 minutes when he beat
the offside trap to shoot past Glyn Dixon. Liam

minutes when he cut in from an angle and beat Dixon
from a similar position to his first goal. Ben
Deacon then made it 3-0 after 38 minutes with a neat
finish. Mayhew came close again on the stroke of
half time but his shot was well saved by Dixon.
His shot was again saved by Dixon after 47 minutes
as Brantham dominated. Paul Hart's free kick went
wide after 52 minutes but Mayhew completed his
hat-trick after 62 minutes with a shot from the edge
of the penalty area after a pass by Deacon. Hart's
25 yard effort shortly afterwards failed to
test Brantham keeper Ryan Bedingfield. After 67
minutes Scopes' through ball was met by Ross
Gilfedder who easily beat Bedingfield for
the visitors. Deacon's shot after 79 minutes was
saved by Dixon and Lee Grimwood's effort was again
