Lewis Blanchett scored a
95th-minute winner direct from a corner to give Brantham
Athletic a 3-2 victory – their fifth in six Ridgeons League
matches this season – against Woodbridge Town at Notcutts Park
on Wednesday night.
Substitute Blanchett’s right-wing corner went through a crowd of
bodies and into the net to secure all three points just two
minutes after Woodbridge’s Josh Mayhew, who had only been on the
pitch for two minutes, fired home a spectacular 25-yard
equaliser.
Woodbridge ultimately paid the
price for their profligacy in front of goal in the first half,
Paul Hart missing three good chances before teenage goalkeeper
Elliot Harrison dived over Daniel Pryke’s dipping volley to give
Brantham a 12th- minute lead.
Hart equalised with a
well-placed header into the top corner from Ben Seaman
50th-minute free-kick, but Brantham looked to have wrapped up
all three points when substitute Shaun Webb turned home in the
87th minute after a one-two between Pryke and Sean Gunn on the
right.

FA
CUP - GORLESTON 2 WOODBRIDGE TOWN 1 23 August 2011 |
 |
Woodbridge were left to rue a
hatful of missed goalscoring opportunities as they bowed out of
the FA Cup at the first stage for the third time in as many
seasons.
Woodbridge made the worst possible start falling behind within
less than a minute, losing possession in the Gorleston half
allowing Scott Woodgate to send Chris Sandford clear through to
beat Glyn Dixon. Dixon was forced to make a smart double save 15
minutes later when Olly King broke away in similar fashion but
within three minutes Woodbridge were level. Ben Miller sent a
precision diagonal pass from his own half to Ben Seaman on the
left side who controlled the pass first time with his chest
before firing a suberb strike across Gorleston keeper Elliot
Pride. Both sides had the opportunity to take a lead into the
interval with Dixon saving once again foiling a breakaway by
Sandford. Aaron Churchyard weaved through the Gorleston defence
only to see his effort saved and Sam Banya and James Hubbard
combined with the former's shot with outstretched leg from
Hubbard's return cross going narrowly wide.
Woodbridge dominated during the early stages of the second half
but failed to make their pressure count. Banya had a goalbound
effort from close range blocked with the rebound falling to
Miller whose attempt was blocked on the line by the arm of a
defender which the referee deemed unintentional. Substitute Josh
Mayhew sent in two efforts, the latter a rasping drive that flew
inches the wrong side of the crossbar and Town's second sub Paul
Hart fired straight down the throat of the keeper when presented
with a chance.
The home side's opportunities were less in number but much more
effective. Substitute Bradley Hough's headed in from a free kick
but was adjudged to be offside and with five minutes remaining
and extra time looming Olly King crossed for substitute Ally
McKenna to head the Greens into the next round. |
